Mrs. Ralph Gwaltney and Mrs. Kenneth Osborne announce the local Cancer Crusade surpassed the $1 600 goal with total contributions of 1 671 42 from 752 donors. Homes lead with 1 025 42, Apostolic Church 214 52, businesses 332 50, coin containers 10 88, clubs 88 50.
The Sterling Cancer Crusade raised 234.50 this week, an increase from 160 last year, announced by drive chairman Dale Wirth. Four solicitors, Mrs. Ja. Moore, Mrs. Ruth Rastor fer, Mrs. Evelyn Pratt and Mrs. Mary Chase, helped from Sterling proper including residential, business and coin containers.
Clarence Skaggs was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was fined $100 and costs, and sentenced to three days in jail. Hillard Likens was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and fined $15 and costs. Ralph West faced costs of the case in mayor's court on an insufficient brakes charge.
Storm winds up to 80 mph struck Rittman Saturday causing extensive interior damage to many homes and the collapse of one residence. The Ohio Boxboard Co parking garage roof section was destroyed while the Beech Street house of Dale Sprowl lost half its roof and a wall. Gas was shut off, rain caused further damage, and power and telephone lines were knocked down with brief outages.
Three young men from Rittman face charges in two counties after being arrested for breaking into Rittman High School at 1 30 a m and the Red Bird Foodliner. Wandraw Smith AR Neewry mosesowes and Ronald Riley 18 bound over to Medina County Grand Jury on 1000 bond. a 16 year old was sent to Medina County Probate Judge Cloyd Derhamer. Police say they confessed to the break ins and a neighbor alerted authorities. Warrants have been signed in Wayne County for the trip after release by Medina officials.
Twenty two inspectors from across Ohio visited Rittman to survey commercial and public structures. They found 88 of 97 buildings deficient in fire prevention, while Doylestown inspectors reviewed 44 places with 37 defects. The audits measured potential hazards and stressed owner responsibility. officials noted inspectors lack arrest powers. State Fire Marshal Marx attended, with Ed Knoop and Robert Leedy giving remarks.
Mrs. Ida Lutkart age 77 died Wednesday at her E Sunset Dr home after a year of declining health. Born Leady in Monroe County she lived in Sardis Ohio for 34 years. Survived by husband John daughter Josephine son Irvin sister Christine Schindler four brothers Frank Henry William Jacob Funeral Saturday 2 p.m. Gillman Funeral Home with Rev Dwight B Davidson officiating Burial in Rittman Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening.
John Miller aged 95 died Monday at the Mennonite Old People's Home in Archbold Ohio. Born in Germany he lived on Route 5 Archbold before moving to the home in 1949. He formerly worked as a tailor and is interred at Fairpoint Cemetery. Rittman Grange meets March 5 at 8 p.m. in the Milton Two school building Sterling. Third and fourth degree work to be shown by Smithville and Rittman Granges Baughman Grange opens and Chippewa Grange closes.
A Rittman fire at Freed Ford Garage exposed weaknesses in the town’s emergency call system. Operators couldn’t identify the caller or line, delaying fire response. Officials urged review of fire alarm procedures and possible alternatives to better inform firefighters.

1246 students in Rittman and Doylestown attended a luncheon where J. W. Rutter of Columbus spoke. Kenneth West Raymond Rogers and Arthur Hall named Boy Scout winners in a fire inspection test. Tuesday the scouts aided inspectors on rounds during fire prevention activities.
Judy Sparks of Rittman High School earned the DAR Good Citizen pin and certificate for qualities of dependability leadership service and patriotism after winning the county essay contest. She and other winners received awards on Washingtons Birthday at a colonial tea in Fellowship Hall of Central Christian Church Wooster.
The Rittman BGs fifth and sixth grade basketball squad, undefeated in 22 straight games, will close their season Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Rittman High gym facing Chester.
Loudonville beat Rittman 66 64 in overtime to win the Class B sectional opener at Ashland Tuesday night. A ballroom dancing program begins March 7 at 8 p.m. in the Recreation Hall with Harley Kerr of Akron teaching.

Fredericks Agency announced applications open for special 1956 Ohio plates. Plates may be purchased and placed on cars starting March 1 and must be displayed on all vehicles by March 31.
Gordon K Smitley former Proctor and Gamble district sales manager joined the Rittman Press staff to enhance customer service as part of a youth-integration plan. He and his wife Patricia and daughters Sue and Chris moved to 10 Fairlawn Street in Rittman last Saturday.
A stream of birth notices from Rittman and nearby towns lists nine newborns in late February including Kathryn Louise born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kressmen in Lansford Pa and several other infants to local families.
