More than 400 adults and youngsters attended four Bible schools in Rittman. Mrs Richard Leaf of Wadsworth reads Heroes of the Cross to youngsters at First Brethren Bible School. Mrs George Allenbaugh and Connie Thompson assist a class at Baptist Bible School. Each school ran a two week term ending with a graduation ceremony.
Sixteen Rittman area boys and about 120 Waite County youths will compete in the Waite County Soap Box Derby on July 17 on Route 76 two and a half miles north of Wooster. Finalists from two age classes 11–12 and 13–15 will advance to Akron’s International Derby. weighing in July 13–14 at the Wooster National Guard Armory.
L L Slim Wilmot announced the annual Community Auction Sale sponsored by the Booster Club and Lions Club of Rittman. Proceeds fund local community work, with items collected by club members and pickup arranged by truck. Contributions include furniture, clothing, appliances, an automobile, and an encyclopedia, with proceeds aiding school athletics and sight services.
Dale Maibach age 19 of R. D. Sterling remains hospitalized after a collision where the tractor he drove was struck by a car. Doctors report a punctured lung several broken ribs and a possible collarbone fracture. Visitors are not permitted.
Early Monday a car driven by 16 year old Richard Gish of Rittman left Rt 5 Easton and struck several trees. No injuries listed but the vehicle sustained extensive damage.
The Rittman Press announces plans for a 1955 Town and Country Directory to be printed in fall. Russell Frey says the edition will list every resident on each county road with a criss cross family map and numbering system. Canvassing of about 2500 homes is underway and advertisers are urged to contact the office. A directory for Doylestown Marshallville and Easton will be issued this summer.
Three cases heard by Mayor John Baldwin included Victor Parson of Barberton fined 100 dollars and costs plus three days in jail for driving while intoxicated. Albert Jenkins of Wooster fined 10 dollars and costs for reckless driving. Emmitt Hoadley of Rittman fined 14.50 for speeding. In Justice of the Peace court Milton Hughes and Russell Johnson were fined 15 dollars and costs for disorderly conduct. Six Rittman high school boys sentenced in March to 60 days in county jail began serving June 15 and may attend Sunday church services at home with families.
The notice lists pool hours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and p.m. to 9 p.m. across daily and Sunday sessions.
A Severs union meeting of Morton Salt Co Rittman plant employees is set for 7 30 Wednesday evening June 29 to discuss and vote on a proposed one year contract for the coming year with wages options of 6 cents across the board or 5 to 7 cents graduated by job class. The meeting is open to all members but only union members may vote. The plant employs about 300 with roughly 200 union members. Talks have been ongoing for six weeks and under Taft Hartley the union could strike after July 1.
Doylestown Fire Department sponsors a stay at home Fourth of July with games races tug of war and contests at the municipal park starting 1 30 p m There will be a baseball game at 1 50 p m a picnic dinner 5 to 7 p m and a square dance 7 to 8 30 p m The evening closes with a fire department demonstration Sponsors include the American Legion Lions Club and various local groups with a Ladies Auxiliary lunch stand providing refreshments
Plans for Rittman Water Carnival Sunday July 3 include a 1 PM and 8:30 PM program with a life saving demonstration a diving exhibition and a comedy for children. The council also discussed purchasing a new police cruiser radio upgrading fire equipment stop signs sidewalk plans and street repairs.
Births include a boy for Mr and Mrs Harold Kuntz of Rittman on June 21 and a boy for Mr and Mrs Robert Bodager of Rittman on June 28. Also a boy for Mr and Mrs Howard Higgins of Marshallville on June 2, a daughter to Ryneer of Wooster on June 25 at Wooster Community Hospital, a girl for Mr and Mrs Allan House on June 16 at Akron City Hospital, and a daughter to Dr and Mrs R A Ripple on June 24 at Community Osteopathic Hospital in Orrville. paternal and maternal grandparents listed for several cases.
Mrs Hodovan was installed as president of the Wayne County Council American Legion Auxiliary at the regular meeting in Marshallville. Installing officer Mrs Ralph Overholt chose Miss Dora Wright as Secretary and Mrs W W Bodager as Sgt at Arms. Other attendees included Mrs Glenn Haller and several area members. A musical program followed, and a summer recess was declared with meetings to resume in September at the remodeled American Legion Home on East Sunset Drive in Rittman.
Miss Kathleen Hostetler of Rittman, a librarian, underwent surgery at People's Hospital in Akron last week and is reported improving. Source mentions Jack Tener? and Orrville Osteopathic Hospital, unclear details.
Mrs. Virgie L. Halsey of Home Street died unexpectedly at her residence Tuesday morning after five months of illness. Funeral services will be Saturday at Gillman Funeral Home with Rev. Albert Henry. burial in Rittman Cemetery. She is survived by husband Park L. Halsey two daughters Mrs Phyllis Weaver and Mrs Francis Holsinger a stepdaughter Mrs Peggy Heinsy her parents Mr and Mrs Kelse Blanton eight grandchildren two sisters Mrs Mattie Thompson and Mrs Abbie Jackson Cleveland and two brothers Cap Blanton and Bastom Blanton. She was born in Louisa Kentucky and had lived in Rittman 30 years. She was a member of the Church of God.
Mrs. Mary Rudd of 50 Salt St. dies after a two week illness. Born in Glenmont, widow of George Rudd, she lived in Rittman 51 years and was active in First Church of Christ. Survived by two daughters Ruth and Lucy Campbell, one granddaughter, and nephew Carl Rizor. Burial in Rittman cemetery. funeral by Gillman.
Allie Welday aged 82 died of a heart attack Friday morning at his brother Roy Welday’s home on Chippewa Lake. Funeral services were held Monday at Kindig Funeral Home in Seville with Rev. Allan Baker officiating. He is survived by two sons Earl and John of Wadsworth, two sisters Dora Miller of Rittman and Bertha Mong of Wadsworth, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Burial was in West Lafayette Cemetery in Medina County.
