Derailment at Erie Line in Rittman Closes Tracks

A 31 car derailment on the Erie Railroad near Rittman halted traffic for 24 hours. The S6th car axle broke at 3 45 am on Sunday, 60 workers and two cranes cleared debris over four days. estimated damage neared 200000 with 117000 to freight cars and 63000 to commodities.

Flood prevention structures underway in Hocking watershed

Two upper Hocking Pilot watershed structures begin construction soon. Paul Kent Construction of Granville won the bid at 160 000 dollars. The project includes Dry Structure No 3 with no permanent pool and Structure No 4 with an 11 acre permanent pool and 67 acre feet storage.

Services Friday For Park Halsey

Funeral services for Park Halsey 64 of Home Street will be held Friday at 1 p m at Gillman Funeral Home. Halsey died Tuesday night at Wooster Community Hospital from a heart attack. He worked over 25 years for Ohio Box Board Company and lived 30 years in Rittman after moving from Ada in 1929. He is survived by wife Virgie, two daughters Frances Hollinger and Peggy Lee Hines, one step daughter Phyllis Weaver, two brothers Roy and Carl, three sisters Ferry Halsey Irene Irwin Grace Morrison, and five grandchildren.

Rittman Carni-Fair Plans for July 7 11 Set

Plans completed for the July 7 11 Rittman Carni Fair with good weather and big crowds expected. Vernon Steiner chairs the committee with Roy Kimes as secretary Bob Bodager treasurer and Red Duskey among the members. The event features rides tents prizes nightly giveaways by American Legion Firemen and Lions and a larger format than last year.

Rutrhan Savings Bank Boosts Interest to 3 Percent

President Ralph Krabill announced Rutrhan Savings Bank will start July 1 paying 3 percent interest on all savings accounts. He said the increase aligns with rates at Akron and Cleveland and keeps the bank competitive.

Boxboard workers receive six cent hourly raise in Ohio

Ohio Boxboard Company hourly employees get a six cent per hour pay increase. New rates appear on this weekend’s checks with June first week adjustments on next week’s pay. The agreement followed May 29 negotiations between the company and Local 150 of the International union.

Howard Schick Dies Suddenly at 56 in Ohio

Funeral services were held Thursday at Milton Presbyterian Church for Howard Charles Schick 56 of Rittman R D 1 born October 17 1902 in Akron. He died Monday after a heart attack while chores. Survived by Frances wife one son Howard two daughters seven grandchildren. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery Akron.

Two $2000 Boxboard scholarships awarded to high school seniors

Carol Shook of Rittman and Ronald Wasikowski of South Bend win the Ohio Boxboard Company Foundation’s annual scholarships. Each $500 per year for four years at an accredited college. Shook graduated from Rittman High and held multiple leadership roles. Wasikowski was a varsity letterman in football and track.

Local men named to board of new packaging firm

Directors of American Box Board Central Fibre Products and The Ohio Boxboard Co approve a merger plan creating Packaging Corporation of America. Meetings to vote on July in Grand Rapids Quincy and Rittman set. The new firm will have 43 facilities and nine directors with Wayne Young as chair and Carey as president.
