Three Boxboard Firms Agree On Merger Terms

Ohio Boxboard Co American Boxboard Co and Central Fiber Co announce a merger forming a large national container firm with 30 plants from New York to Utah and about $115 million annual sales. Stockholders vote anticipated next month with local operations in Rittman expected to remain stable.

Paving Inspector to Be Hired at Village Meeting

Routine council session authorized hiring a paving inspector at two dollars an hour plus travel for three months to ease the Village Engineer’s workload. A college student will fill the role during paving work completion. Downspout and house to house surveys were approved and zoning near North Main amended to Sunset Drive from residential to commercial. The city will bill owners for weed removal on vacant lots, and May fines totaling three hundred dollars were reported by the mayor.

Six Playgrounds Open This Summer Under City Plan

Six summer playgrounds have begun operations led by Director Homer Pyle. Attendance is light due to Bible Schools but expected to rise weekly. Supervisors Vera Wheeler and Connie Rhonemus plan games and crafts. Grandview Park opens Monday and Friday, West Hill School Tuesday and Thursday, Central Park Tuesday and Thursday, and American Legion Park Wednesday.

Thirteen Cars Destroyed by Fire at Ohio Boxboard Lot

Early Thursday morning a fire in the Ohio Boxboard plant parking lot destroyed thirteen cars and damaged a garage. Fire Chief Joe Goodhart estimated damage at 30 000 dollars. The blaze began in one car at 3 45 a m and spread to the roof and other vehicles. Cause undetermined. Residents from a hill in Rittman reported seeing the flames and cars’ horns sounded as onlookers gathered. School Board Accepts Principal Sylvan Wiles Resignation

The school board accepted principal Sylvan Wiles resignation effective June 15 after three years in the Rittman School system and military service. Interviewing to fill the post began Thursday, per Superintendent W H Hauenstein.

Alumni Picnic Planned for Rittman Center Park June 28

Rittman High School alumni are invited to a Sunday June 28 picnic at Rittman Centre Park pavilion with a 1 p.m. basket dinner. Attendees should bring table service and a basket. coffee is provided by the committee led by Marvin Bauman president and Roger Hessidence secretary-treasurer.

School Board Considers Classroom Expansion and Reorganization

The board reviews surveys and proposes adding rooms for grades two and seven to control class sizes. If not added, grade totals will be large. A plan moves Grade 4 to West Hill and Grade 6 to First Street School, with Grade 9-12 space later.

Vacation Bible Schools Report Large Attendance

Vacation Bible Schools see high turnout as four programs run this week. North Street School hosts "Adventuring With Christ" led by Rev Dwight Davidson from 9 to 11 am for ages 3 to 13 through June 19. First Brethren's program directed by Rev Charles Turner ends June 19 with theme "Having for Jesus in the Space Ape." Other schools include First Baptist under Rev JE Wheeling and First Church of Christ with themes "Following Christ" and supervision by Brother Joe B Thompson.

Funeral Services Held For George Fritz 89

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Gillman Funeral Home for George Watson Fritz 89 a longtime Rittman resident. Born February 20 1870 in Shiversburg he lived in the Rittman area his entire life and helped transform the region from forest to farm land. He died Saturday afternoon at 73 West Hall Ave after a long illness. He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Mary Castor a son Willard Fritz five grandchildren and one nephew. Interment was in Rittman Cemetery.

Off Street Parking Lots Recommended By Planning Commission

The Planning Commission supports two off street parking lots to ease downtown shortages. One site north of Baptist Church on Ohio Street, the other behind Village Pump on South Main. Government owned Ohio lot may take three years to transfer to private use.

Strawberry Festival Planned by St Ann’s Church

The junior and senior high school oath of St. Ann's Catholic Church will hold a Strawberry Festival on the church lawn Saturday after noon, June 20. Final plans will be made at a meeting Thursday evening at 86 Meadowvale. Strawberries, cake and ice cream will be served.
