May 1940 in World War II and U S defense drive
A May 1940 overview notes the German blitzkrieg in the Low Countries, Belgium, and Holland, and assesses American arms production. It contrasts World War I and II demands, cites long odds in bomber and ordnance output, and calls for rapid industry and military reorganizations to avert Axis dominance. It highlights criticisms of the President, industry, labor, and the public, urging swift, decisive action to build a stronger two ocean fleet and robust airpower.
