A late Monday night storm drenched the area with powerful winds causing extensive damage. Roofs were blown off, buildings sustained structural harm, and crews report at least several properties impacted with emergency response teams assessing the scene.
Police Chief Charles J. Heffelman calls for strict traffic law observance to reduce injuries. He appeals to drivers to keep within a 25 mph limit, cooperate with a new safety campaign starting Friday June 12, and notes reports from five women’s organizations urging safer streets. Authority says enforcement will continue. names of reporters are kept confidential.
Tornados and high winds damaged a city area with homes and garages flattened. Cranes, brick walls, and debris littered streets while several vehicles and structures were wrecked. Residents, including Delmer Shafer and Samuel Nestor, reported damaged property and disrupted utilities.
Celebrate Sthorang Crushed Rittman's largest industry the Ohio Boxboard Company opens its doors to the public Saturday for an open house observing the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1900. The plant employing about 1800 will welcome thousands from 10 am to 9 pm with guided tours, informational pamphlets, decor prizes, and parking along Route 94.
Abus aviation announces shuttle service between the north parking lot and the south dock entrance. The open facility will serve the general public. Committee members promise for former employees and visitors many surprises when they see the changes and improvements. Visitors will also be served refreshments.
City solicitor C. E. Rhonemus reminded residents of a 10 a.m. Friday hearing at the Wayne County courthouse on June 12. The Wooster hearing, before the Ohio Public Utilities Commission, will examine the Ohio Central Telephone Company and service concerns, with subscribers seeking priority in testimony.
The expanded sewage disposal plant should operate by next Monday pending no delays, contractor Albert Goffinet told the council on Monday night. The council also planned to appoint additional traffic patrolmen, refer sewer complaints to street commissioner Al Branstetter, expect the city to hire its own superintendent after opening the plant, and enforce parking restrictions on Salt Street. A Galion street grader bid of 431.30 was accepted. Don K Freed requests for gas pumps near street curb were denied. Fire Department answered two calls in May.
Wayne County Historical Week runs June 28 to July 4 with windows in Rittman filled with historical articles. E E McConnell of the Rittman Historical Society leads cooperation with the county bicentennial committee to showcase furniture, clothing, documents and books in local stores.
At about 1815 Saturday near Easton at Rt 94 and 5 a car driven by Edward Taylor 38 of Revoasta failed to stop at a sign. He and two passengers Krogh and his wife Betty 21 are in serious or fair condition at Dunlap Hospital Orrville. Paramedics took the injured to Orrville Hospital.
The acting mayor Lewis F Todvers attends a six week school session in Hartford Connecticut as part of an improvised program.
The county health department urges parents to bring children entering first grade next September to the North Street school Freeomedical and dental exam. A time schedule targets residents by street zone with transport help via contact numbers.
Everett C Armentrout and Lillian R Scott, both connected to Doylestown, appear in a local marriage licenses list. The entries also mention Edison O and Joan N Downs, with roles noted as student and teacher respectively, along with other fragmented names.
Two 100 foot stacks at the Morton Salt Company were toppled after a year of standing, leaving the remnants of once elegant structures in place.
