Eleanor Glassner obsesses over a supposed double life of a local bird watcher dubbed a “busy boy” as neighbors report multiple bird houses and odd travel between them. The column mixes quirky gossip with parish notices, birthdays, visitors, Club events, and family news from Rittman area, including hospital updates, travel to Bermuda and Texas, and a going away party for the Trojes.
Council renewed efforts to curb dilapidated homes and rubbish as it debated a stronger local ordinance. Councilman Kinch urged study of enforcement rules, while others pressed for action on open ditches unsafe sites and neglected parks.

Rittman School Board Wednesday night again faced a classroom shortage as four slow learners were approved for placement in the North Central School District with qualified status. If no room at Burbank exists when school opens, Superintendent Hauenstein warned they may have to start a new school. Two more slow learners remain unplaced for fall term, prompting efforts to place them in the area. Architects Spahh and Barnes proposed remodeling plans for the North Street playroom into glass classrooms, with options for two large rooms, a three classroom, or a five classroom configuration. Sylvan Wiles urged avoiding split classrooms unless heat, ventilation and acoustics are adequate. Principal John Heter suggested a study hall in the high school auditorium. The board discussed possibly eliminating lunch rooms. Board President William Mays and Hauenstein will confer with architects for cost estimates on each plan.
Rittman residents can voice opinions on the city's operating budget at the July 23 Council session. An open hearing will review expenditures for the coming year and consider a possible operating levy increase. City Manager Charles Mann urges residents to act now and asks questions about city finances.
Donald J. McConnell of Massillon has won a Fulbright scholarship to study German literature at the University of Freiburg Germany. A magna cum laude John Carroll graduate he held three scholarships and twice won top German scholastic honors.
A five member Citizens' Committee led by Ashton Hall was formed to aid in resolving the PCA plant strike in Rittman. Members include Mayor O A Houglan Chamber of Commerce President David Wright Rev Charles Turner and J C of C President Ben Bodager. Union president Alvin Johnson welcomed the move, while PCA manager Ed Stentz and Federal Mediator John Duffy discussed ongoing negotiations and separate meetings.
Earl W Strock 75 of Wooster father of Mrs Sherman Dalbey of Rittman died Monday at Community Hospital. A Wayne County businessman and officer of First Federal Savings and Loan, he served as Wooster Chamber of Commerce and Wooster Businessmen’s Association director. He belonged to Ebenezer Lodge 33 F and A M VFW American Legion Post 68 and Zion Lutheran Church. WWI veteran with the 308th Engineers. Memorial service held at Zion Lutheran Church. private burial in Wooster Cemetery.
Jim Landis 16 of Rittman was injured when his car collided with a pickup driven by Marion Warren on Route 70 near Geor Petit Inc. He remained hospitalized in Barberton City Hospital with a severe headache after the crash while Warren also received treatment. The Landis family was vacationing at Cedar Point and had returned home Tuesday.
