Local residents vent about ducks invading yards harming flowers and birds. Community notices include weddings anniversaries births and social events with neighbors traveling and visiting relatives across Ohio and beyond.
Morton Salt Company unveils 25 and 50 pound salt pellet containers designed for self service shelves. Packaging Corporation of America produced the new corrugated, high fade resistant carton with a plastic handle and tear top for easy use. The redesign aims to lift salt pellets off the floor into convenient display, reflecting growth in water softening demand.
Hubert J Malone 55 of Kent Ohio died July 3 at Robinson Memorial Hospital Ravenna after a cerebral hemorrhage. Born October 5 1906 in Union County he lived in Kent 20 years formerly of Rittman. Employed 19 years at Gogler Machinery Co he belonged to Rockton Lodge 316 F and AM. Survived by wife Susan A daughter Nancy Davis Ravenna two sisters Edith Tevis East Liberty Zada Wells Marysville and two grandchildren. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at Tinker Funeral Home Kent Rev Carl T Pierson officiating burial Standing Rock Cemetery.
Services were held Tuesday for Mollie E. Holcomb longtime Rittman elementary teacher who died Sunday after major surgery in Akron and Wooster. Born in Montpelier Kentucky, she taught third and fourth grade in Rittman from 1938 and lived there 37 years. Survived by son James R. and brother Russell Bell. Burial in Rittman Cemetery. Gillman-Haines Funeral Home in charge.
Federal Mediator John Duffy schedules a Friday morning meeting at his Akron office between union Local 150 and Packaging Corporation of America representatives. The strike has reached its fourth week as both sides press reforms on overtime, absentee policies, and shift pay while trying to avert a broader disruption.
Rittman’s Morton Salt plant, Salt Gives Wage Hike To Workers Local 12081 of the United Mine Workers approved a two year contract by 2 to 1. The pact raises hourly wages five to eight cents plus benefits and a reopening clause. About 20 employees are affected. Women receive five cents, men in labor grades I through III get six cents, IV seven cents, and grades V to XI eight cents. Other provisions include paid funeral leave, a new dependent insurance program from July 15, optional early retirement at age 60, changes to apprentice training, and one new working foreman in the power department. The agreement can be reopened after one year for wage and training discussions.
Services were held Thursday for Mrs Lucy M Humes 76 of Rittman who died Monday afternoon at Wadsworth Municipal Hospital after a long illness She was a member of Rittman First Church of Christ born in Monroe County lived in Bellaire Ohio before moving to Rittman in 1928 Her husband Porter preceded her in death in 1951 Survived by two sons Raymond and Shirley of Wadsworth 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren Funeral arrangements were handled by Gillman-Haines Funeral Home.
Rittman's new soliciting ordinance will test Mayor's Court next week as four magazine salesmen face charges of selling door to door without a permit. They were taken into custody by Police Chief Merle Heffelman and will appear before Acting Mayor Aston Hall next Wednesday. the crew manager is expected to testify. Since the ordinance was adopted last year, 28 permits have been issued to various salesmen and at least one group has been refused a permit according to City Manager Charles Mann.
The first annual reunion for the Rittman High School graduating class of 1961 will be held Sunday July 8 at Clay Park. Members should meet at Williams Restaurant at noon and bring a sack lunch. Guests are invited.
A talk with Dr Cahit Chorba of Corum Turkey reveals a nation with good schools and strong government control of education. He compares Turkish education to the United States noting compulsory schooling and free universities funded by the state. Academic freedom exists in theory, though incidents of government firings show tension. Chorba’s path includes Yale training after a 1947 medical degree and compulsory military service.
Frederick S McAnallen 52 died suddenly at home and funeral services will be held Friday at 1 pm at Gillman Haines Funeral Home with Rev Fr Lawrence Andes officiating. Burial in St Anns Cemetery. He lived at 256 Industrial Street, was a long-time Rittman resident, former Lodi native, employed 32 years at Packaging Corporation of America as a pressman, and a Loyal Order of Moose member. Survived by wife Florence, three brothers Charles William Delmont, a sister Bernetta Andes, and several nieces and nephews.
Jack Wenger owner of Ebert Electric elected to the Rittman Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors replacing Ray Semmler of Ohio Edison Company who transferred. President David Wright says Wenger will assist Glenn Parman in promoting community affairs through the Merchants Committee.
Mrs. Donald Austin of 73 South Main Street placed an ad in The Rittman Press to rehome three kittens in need of TLC and also secure a home for the mother cat. The arrangement saves money and a fall ad will not be needed to place the next litter.
A Friday evening report of a fire on 54 North Fourth Street prompted trucks and a crew to rush to the scene. No blaze was found after the inspection, and the apparatus returned to City Hall, logging the incident as a costly false alarm.
Completes Course Army Pvt. Robert A. Biederman 18 son of Robert E. Biederman 63 Salt Street recently completed the five week aircraft maintenance course at Aviation School Fort Ricker Al He entered the army in January and completed basic training at Fort Knox where he received instruction in operating army air fields and servicing and maintaining army planes and helicopters.
