On the first anniversary of the Spanish Civil War, Soviet and Japanese forces clashed in the Amur River region. Moscow offered to withdraw if Tokyo did likewise while the Soviet government floated a defense loan of 4,000,000,000 rubles now worth about $8.06 billion.
In Columbus Ohio lawyers for the Communist party challenged Governor Davey’s authority to deploy the National Guard to avert bloodshed at Mahoning Valley steel mills opening. Indiana Harbor Inland Steel expects 12 000 workers back under a Townsend truce. Union activity at Ford Dearborn is mailing Maverick speech to 19 000 employees.
The Endeavor II, skippered by R J T O M Sopwith, will race in August as the Welsh challenger to the America’s Cup. Endeavor II is said to be faster than Endeavor I, which Sopwith also sailed here for trials. The American defender will be chosen after ongoing trials.
Washington reports the State Department confirms a batch of ambassadorial transfers. Hugh S. Gibson moves from Brazil to Belgium, Jefferson Caffey shifts Cuba to Rio de Janeiro, and J Butler Wright relocates from Czechoslovakia to Havana. Retirements are anticipated for senior envoy Dave Morris.

Funeral services for Mrs Verne Shumacker will be Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the Baptist Church in Seville. She died Wednesday at her sister's home in Seville. Born north of Sterling she taught in Sterling schools and was active in the church and civic groups. She led the WB.A. in Seville for years and is survived by two sons Maynard and Eugene, a daughter Mary Over, a sister Mrs Swagler, and two brothers. Services are by R D Armstrong Funeral Home with Rev P S Hyde officiating.

John McGorry of Second Street was released from Wayne County jail in Worcester after posting 300 bond to guarantee appearance for trial July 31 on a driving while intoxicated charge. He was arraigned before Judge Walter Mougey and pleaded not guilty. The arrest followed a deputy marshal pickup at 1308 Main Street.
