Lutheran Church Elects Officers

The Seville Jerusalem Lutheran church elected officers and dedicated new gold altar vases and candlesticks donated in memory of family members. New Sunday school officers and class teachers are named along with home department leaders, pianists, cradle roll, and junior superintendent appointments.

Garver to Show Pictures at Sterling U B Church

Vv. A Garver, superintendent of the Rittman schools, will show colored movies from his Florida and California trips at the Sterling United Brethren church Sunday evening. The adult director of Christian Education, Mrs Vance Vanostran, has planned to have the evening service led by a guest from home or elsewhere to reestablish the Sunday service and stimulate interest. Church officials say the past three months have yielded satisfactory results.

Old Currency Tells Monetary Story Of Time Change

Old currency notes on display at J. H. Fisher’s office reveal bank issued bills from southern states and a few from New England and Michigan. Many are dated 1837 or earlier, wrinkled and ornate with scrolls, colorwork, and large size compared with modern currency.

Nelson Hall to Manage Canton Super Market Purchase

Nelson Hall, manager of the Acme Store, announced he will leave Rittman on Monday to take over management of a Canton super-market he has purchased. He departs after seven years at the Rittman store, five and a half as manager.

Council Approves Advertising Licensing Ordinance

In a regular Monday night session the council approved an ordinance licensing out-of-town advertisers and regulating posting times. Fees start at four dollars per piece plus sixty cents per advertiser, with an eight dollar maximum. An older ordinance regulating commercial advertising was repealed under suspended rules. The council also hired R. C. Raff as superintendent of the sewage disposal plant for 125 dollars monthly. Bills for supplies and labor were approved unanimously. Public utilities committee reported completion of the street light elimination west of Ganyard and Park.

Rittman Farmer Dies By Own Action On Farm

Thirty two year old Steve Palos Jr of the Giant Sheets farm northeast of Rittman shot himself at his farm residence ending a prior suicide attempt from thirteen years earlier. Wayne County Coroner Adrian J Hartzler attributed the death to suicide as Marshal Charles Heffelman and Sheriff Ed Mills investigated. Funeral services are set for Saturday afternoon with burial in Barberton. Ebert Funeral Home overseeing arrangements. He is survived by his father Steve Palos.

Loyal Collie Guards Dead Companion On Lonely Road

Henry Long, a rural mail carrier, found a dead dog by the Wadsworth Easton road. Two other collies stayed close, guarding the scene for days, refusing to leave until highway crews moved the body. Local residents offered food for the loyal survivor as it kept vigil more than four days after the tragedy.

Police News: Melvin Murray Fined Over Seville Crash

Melvin Murray of Seville was tried Wednesday night before Mayor Baldwin for the crash into a truck driven by D. M. Vore in front of Strickland's Garage last Wednesday. Murray was fined 25 dollars and 8.70 dollars costs, with the fine suspended on condition he pay damage costs.

IRS Wooster Zone Office Opens Feb 4 for Tax Help

The Wooster Zone Office of the Internal Revenue Service will assist individuals in filing income tax returns starting February 4 on each business day through March 16. On February 21 a deputy collector will be at the Rittman Post Office to aid local residents.

Fire damages Ray Grella apartment above shop

Firemen responded Monday night to a blaze started in a back room of the Ray Grella apartment above Dickerson's Shoe Shop on Main Street. The cause is undetermined and estimated damage runs to 50 dollars. Fire Chief Everett Winkler reported both village and community fire teams attended the scene at about 9 30 p m.

Boxboard Installs Caliper Control on Two Machines

Ohio Boxboard installed electric caliper control equipment on its number one and two machines to automate thickness control. A light beam and photoelectric tube, known as the electric eye, gauge thickness and maintain uniform caliper by adjusting stock flow to the cylinders. The system, developed by Electric Eye Equipment of Danville, Illinois, provides automatic thickness checks.

Residents Rally for Infantile Paralysis Drive in Rittman

The Wayne County Infantile Paralysis Committee launched a county campaign in Rittman led by W. W. Bodager with O. E. Rhone mus assisting. Coin collectors and solicitors operate in local businesses as drives seek funds to buy an iron lung and support medical aid with 24 hour service from the National Foundation program. Wayne County will receive half of all funds raised through local channels.

Rittman Youths Fail Cleveland Army Exam

Wiliam Swartz of Rittman and Melvin Douglas of Orrville were among 35 Wayne County men who went to Cleveland for a year of U S Army training but failed the strict physical test and returned home. In the past week more Rittman youths received questionnaires including Clyde A Wilson and others, while Ralph J Boyes, 19, volunteered with the Orrville Board.

Payton Addresses Creston P T A Group

Mrs Payton of Wooster addressed the Creston High School auditorium on Monday night. The talk titled The Magic Carpet included excerpts from children's books. First and second graders provided music by the rhythm band, the Pate twins sang, and a postal demonstration was given. Miss Euphemie Neabitt escorted youngsters to a classroom for stories.
