School Executives Set Cage Dates For B Tourney

The annual Class B basketball tournament dates were fixed at Sterling in a three day format over two weeks to allow player rest. February 17 19 and 22 24 26 with March 1 set as the concluding day. Comrie Rites Held for Ada Native Alex Comrie

Funeral services were held Sunday in Ada Ohio for Alex Comrie a native of the area who died of influenza last Friday. He was the grandfather of C. E. Rhonemus and survived by a daughter and three other grandchildren.

Volunteer Firemen Meet Hears Sid Wellock On Pay

Sid Wellock state secretary of the Volunteer Firemen's Association and Coventry fire chief spoke on compensation for firemen at a Wayne County Volunteer Firemen's Association meeting. About 82 people attended Monday evening at the city Ball.

Indians Lose Weekend Games To Dalton And Loudonville

Rittman high school basketball fell to Dalton 54 25 on the Dalton floor as Peters and Ramsler led Dalton with 13 16 point totals and Rittman battled injuries missing Milford and Zivkovich. The Indians later dropped to Loudonville 32 18 in a rough Central Buckeye League contest paced by Darling's 12 points for Loudonville while Spit and Riggs led Rittman with 4 points each. The Reserves added a ninth straight win, with Petkoff scoring 11 for Rittman.

Junior Hiagers Win 17th Contest

The Rittman Junior Highs journeyed to Doylestown Friday afternoon and won their seventeenth game of the season against one loss. The half score stood 19 to 3. Orr led with 12 points on six field goals, while Leonard Wertz followed with nine points from three field goals and three foul shots.

Farm Account Books Available At Wooster

Farm account books for Wayne County farmers are available at the Agricultural Extension Office in the Court House Wooster. Priced at 15 cents, these simple ledgers are prepared by the Ohio Bankers Association and Extension Service in cooperation and are used to record farm receipts and expenses by farmers vocational students and tech high school programs.

Village hires street foreman and crew

Wayne Kurtz is employed as foreman of the street commission to head a crew of three assistants and operate the village truck. R. W. Fredrick was named street commissioner. An ordinance approved the hiring of a foreman at seventy cents per hour and outlined the three assistant positions. Other commission members are L. A. Branstetter Luther Raudebush and Joseph Pape.

Brother of Local Man Plays Way To Band Fame

Louis D Ashbrook, brother of Ray Ashbrook of Rittman, rose from playing clarinet in Marengo Ohio to leading his own band in Cleveland. He joined Ace Brigade’s Virginians, then Gray Gordon’s orchestra in Kansas City. They played at the Drake Hotel in St Louis, Marigold Gardens Chicago, college proms, and various parks before a two winter stint at the Ohio Edison Hotel Times Square New York, drawing local attention.

Board to Hold Special Meeting To Fill Third Grade Vacancy

The Board of Education plans a special session next week to act on Charlotte M Brown’s resignation and fill her third grade post at the First St building. Until a replacement is hired Superintendent Garver may employ a substitute at $5 per day. The board also forms committees on salaries and building matters and finalizes the budget for April.

Brodbeck To Head Firemen In 1941

Don Brodbeck was named president of the Rittman fire department for 1941 at a recent meeting. Elected officers included Norman Beery as vice president, Lawrence Stogimiller as secretary, Herr Brickel as assistant secretary, and C B Shook as treasurer. Fire losses in 1940 totaled 1075 dollars. The department answered 16 calls: 14 town, 1 Doyle’s town, and 1 township. They laid 950 feet of 2 1/2 inch hose and 50 feet of booster hose, and operated one chemical tank in 1940 fires.

Orchestral musicians seek stable base near New York

Last summer the orchestra played for society at the Worcester Country Club in Rye New York a short drive from New York City. Ashbrook has appeared on major radio networks. Louis left rapid engagements to join Mark Fisher and his Chicago band for a steady home life. Gordon reformed the group and played recently in Akron.

J H Fisher Heads Local Committee On Greek Relief

J H Fisher leads the Wayne county Greek war relief drive with aid chapters in Rittman and Orrville to raise funds for food clothing and medicine for Greek civilians wounded soldiers and children. County chair Marion Craven vows all local money will fund US purchases and overseas shipments while Harold Vanderbilt serves as honorary national chair.

County Families Plan Annual Farm Security Session at Wooster

Wayne County families in the Farm Security Administration Tenant Purchase program will hold their annual planning meeting in Wooster on January 28. They will review 1940 farm and home accounts to guide 1941 plans and determine loan repayment under the variable plan. Lawrence R. Cummings Services Held Thursday Afternoon

Cummings, 54, died of a heart attack Monday evening while working at Ohio Boxboard Co. Funeral services were at United Brothers Church Thursday at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. C. J. McGee. Nine men from Rittman answered the second draft call under Selective Service Board No. 2 in Wayne County. The train car carried John H. Gumi until illness forced his withdrawal. Police report on multiple traffic collisions and charges

Police: Melvin Murray of Seville entering Main from Sterling Ave collided with a southbound truck driven by D M Vore of Smithville at 1 0 p m Wednesday. Murray charged with reckless driving to be tried before Mayor Baldwin on January 29. Marshal Heffelman investigated another accident involving Otto Behoildt of Cleveland at Main and the high school drive. Burkett arrested Friday night January 17 for reckless driving, tried before Justice Sherrick, fined 9 10 with 5 suspended.
