The Boxboard Company today announced that applications are being sought for two extra college scholarships. The awards will go to this year's high school graduates who are children of employees of the company and its wholly owned subsidiaries.
Several council members voiced disapproval of running for re election with al Mogler confirming he will not seek another term. Ed Musser weighs a mayoral bid while Edith Jones witnessed a car crash at Main Street store. Rittman Indians basketball team noted as a strong contender in a home loss. Company foundation offers two new scholarships totaling eight grants this year. February 22 was final filing date with June awards.
Funeral services held for Avery, 45, at Creston Baptist Temple with burial at St. Louis. Survivors include parents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Pittman and sister Sandra Pad, along with Mr. and Mrs. Glebtye Avery and other relatives.
Mrs. Vernon Steiner was chosen president of the Rittman Mothers Club at the regular meeting held Tuesday night at her North Street home. Officers include Donald Fisher vice president Herbert Hunt secretary Earl Franks treasurer and Geo Allenbaugle new program committee member. The evening featured devotions by Mrs Robert Davis and a talk by C E Rhonemus on The Importance of a Property Drawn Will.
Lillian Van Nostran of Rittman High earned the state runnerup title in the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow program. She achieved the top score on the Dec 4 written exam and advances to state competition for the All-American Homemaker honor plus a $500 runnerup scholarship and other awards for finalists.
John P. Hostetler 45 of Rittman died Tuesday after a three month illness. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Gillman Funeral Home with Rev. Robert M. Smith and Al Hance officiating. He was employed 27 years as an electrician at Ohio Boxboard Co. Interment in Rittman Cemetery. Survivors include wife Martha two daughters Phyllis Benek and Patricia Malcuit six grandchildren and two brothers Fred and Raymond.
A campaign to keep Rittman Recreation Hall open for one year has raised nearly $900 from clubs and individuals. Board chairman Russell Riggs says with rent money and anticipated donations the hall will stay open. Homer Pyle is hired as part time recreation director and the swimming pool will open this summer. Donors include Lions Club 150 and American Legion Auxiliary 50 among others.
Doylestown Mothers March on Polio sponsored by the PTA will be Thursday evening January 31 from 7 to 8 PM. Residents with porch lights on will join as the march travels through Doylestown East on and Hometown streets.

Plans completed for National Junior Achievement Week January 21 to February 2. Three JA companies Rit-Rite Sty-Lite and Jay Jacks will sell products in Ohio Boxboard lobby January 28 30 and February 1 with open house February 4 at J A Hall.
Street canvassers plan a 6 30 to 7 30 pm drive Thursday January 31 to raise funds for polio care and vaccination. Homes will receive cards noting polio shots for each family member and porch lights are urged to indicate support.
Harold Reese and wife chair Creston polio drive set Tuesday January 29 at 7 p.m. for the Mothers March on polio with a large list of volunteer workers led by Jeanette Tuttle Florence Louis Ruby Sykes Jane Arnold Norma Slater and many others.
County guidance appoints officer J John Rattoran as president of the Wayne Medina Homestead Center on January 16. Board members elected include William Schmidse, Goss Twitchell, Pathe of Doylestown, George and Mrs Ralph Gwaltney, Rev William Creasy, Henry Yablonski, and Kenneth Osborne with terms ranging from one to three years.
Rikman Indians ride a three game skid as they travel to Millersburg Friday then host Northwestern Saturday and go to Dalton Tuesday. Friday’s loss to Doylestown 76 to 47 followed a 140-22 swing and a 63-32 late margin. Jerri Galehouse and G. Lindeman led Doylestown with 21 points each while Karl Benchoff struggled with his lowest scoring night.
At Monday's meeting Cyrus Baird was chosen to fill the unexpired term of Fred Garret on the Board of Public Affairs. Garret moved to Douglas Arizona. Farl Peake was selected to fill the term of Councilman Glen Wolfert who became a clerk at Creston Post Office. The park board was reorganized with Carl Slater Sr Harley Coffey Raymond Sykes James Scott and Clayton Carpenter named as members.
