Kent State Journalism Scholarships Open for Seniors

The Bitt Rittman Press invites graduating high school seniors involved in journalism to apply for freshmen journalism scholarships to Kent State University. Applications due by April 1, 1957, include scholarship name, advisor letter, transcript, civic leader letter, 500 word statement, evidence of interest, and applicant photo.

PTA Minstrel Show Committees Named for 1957 Edition

The PTA minstrel show plans new committees for the 1957 edition. Director is Mrs. Robert Davis with co chairs George Sandrock and Mrs Edwin Taylor. Other chairs include lighting Howard Dickerson stag props Edwin Taylor costumes Louise Semler make up Sally Dalbey publicity George Alexander Chuck Mc Coy and tickets Ruth Bernhardt.

Sonnenberg Mutual Insurance names officers at Dalton meeting

Shkitance co president R. V. Fredrick of 28 W Ohio Ave was elected president of Sonnenberg Mutual Insurance Association at its annual meeting in Dalton Ohio on January 15. He has served as director since 1930 and as vice president since 1941. Other officers elected include W. H. Rudy of Orrville as vice president and E. L. Springer of Dalton as secretary treasurer. New directors are C. H. Krelling of Wilmot to represent Wilmot Beech City, W. H. Rudy for Orrville Smithville, and Raymond Graber of Dalton for the Dalton district.

Chamber of Commerce Dinner Honors Hauenstein Leader

Nearly 150 attended the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner at the American Legion Hall. The main feature was the “quished leader” award to W. H. Hauenstein, superintendent of schools. Fred Neuen­swander of the Wadsworth Chamber spoke on water conservation and planned actions for the area.

Kicking horse case settled out of court

A lawsuit from Doyles town men Andrew Patterson and James Holvey over a horse incident was settled out of court in Akron on Tuesday. Patterson claimed Holvey should have controlled the horse after it kicked him in October 1954. Testimony focused on whether the horse gives a warning before kicking. settlement terms were not disclosed.

Gray Lady training begins January twenty second

A second training session for Red Cross Gray Lady Service will be January 22. Volunteers who complete the course will assist with occupational therapy work at Apple Creek State Hospital. For information contact Wayne County Red Cross Wooster or Angelus 3-1896 between 9 11 30 am or 144 pm Monday through Friday. Members of the initial class Mrs Charles Duskey Mrs F O Kanehl Mrs Hugh Strickland and Mrs Clarence Kunkler will provide further information.

City Hall Seeks New Custodian After Resignation

City Hall resumes custodian vacancy after R. V. Fredrick's resignation as custodian. Mayor John Baldwin states applications are open and those interested should contact the mayor's office. The posting calls for city hall staff to apply through the mayor's office.

Mothers March on Polio Heads Toward January Canvass

Mrs Roger Hessidence was named general chairman of the 1957 Mothers March on Polio. The house-to-house drive will occur Thursday January 3 with the Rittman Mothers Club the Rittman Jr. Mothers Club and the Chit Chat Mothers Club sponsoring. Funds aim to aid care for polio victims and train medical specialists through the March of Dimes while pushing vaccination among Americans up to 35. The campaign theme is Lets Finish the Job.

Legion Bean Dinner for Polio Campaign Sought

The American Legion will host its 5th annual Bean Dinner on Tuesday January 22 starting at 5 PM. Proceeds go to the Polio Drive Committee. Food is donated by contributions and by Joe Wald and Robert Wenger. Admission is one dollar for adults and fifty cents for children.

Democrats Schedule Jan 23 Meeting for May Primary

Democrats will hold a caucus in the mayor's office on January 23 at 8 p.m. to organize and invite all who seek the party ticket in the upcoming May primary.

Services for Charles Ault 72 in Doylestown Friday

Charles W. Ault 72 of Doylestown died after a heart attack Sunday at Wadsworth Municipal Hospital. Born 1884 in Belmont Ohio he moved to Doylestown in 1922 and was active in church Lions Club and Granges. Survived by Vera his wife two sons Richard and Charles a daughter and seven grandchildren. Services set for 2 p.m. Friday.

OES Elects Associate Patron at Rittman Chapter

Rittman Chapter No. 529 of the Order of the Eastern Star held its regular meeting in the Masonic Hall with Mrs. Don Baker as worthy matron and Leonard Over presiding. A special election filled the vacancy caused by William Swartz’s death. Don Nicholls was elected and installed as associate patron. Refreshments followed, and the next stated meeting was moved to January.

Limited council action with four members present

Monday night council met with four members as two were absent and could not pass ordinances. They began moving the retirement age for city employees from 40 to 41 next year and discussed street department retirements while delaying several zoning and pay questions until the January 28 meeting.
