Kenneth Osborne Named Citizen Of The Year In Rittman

Kenneth W Osborne was named Rittman’s Citizen of the Year for 1961 at the Chamber of Commerce banquet at the American Legion Home. James Frye presented a certificate and a $59 savings bond. C E Rhonemus received a $10 check for nominating him. Also nominated were Esther Overholt Homer Pyle Robert West and Willard Hilty. Osborne, born in Columbus and living in Rittman since 1929, is a Packaging Corp Superintendent and active in the Milton Presbyterian Church, the Chamber, and local civic groups. The nomination highlights his role in obtaining a modern public library for Rittman, including leadership on the Wayne County Library Board and the Winkler building project on West Ohio Avenue.

Nat Watson Named Air Force Alternate From Doylestown

Nat Watson of Doylestown is named one of ten alternates to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs by Rep. Frank T. Bow. Principal nominee is Fritz Joseph McDougall, son of SFC and Mrs. Richard McDougall, with ties to Orrville. Watson is a Chippewa High School senior eligible for the June 1962 class.

Two Men Arrested for Beating Local 72 Year Old

Two Rittman men Ronald Leé Just age 23 of 121 N State Street and Walter R. French age 25 of 257 South Main Street were jailed on assault with intent to rob after luring a 72 year old resident from a tavern to Wadsworth, beating him, stealing 25 cents, and dumping him near East Sunset and North Seneca. The man suffered a broken hand and rib and facial lacerations and was treated at home due to hospital crowding.

Plans Grow for PTA Minstrel Show Production

Plans are shaped for the annual PTA Minstrel Show to be produced March 15, 16 and 17. Co chairs Mary Butler and Harry Ditch, under director Gene Sharick, announced committee helpers this week. Ed Boyle will head lighting, Joe Powers ticket sales, and Mrs. Harold Youmans costumes. MCs include Chuck McCoy and Don Niehaus among others, with at least one end man still needed. Singers, musicians and production crews are being sought. practice sessions were well attended and a call for more participants was issued for Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the high school band room.

Services Held For Mrs I Rena Miller

Mrs I Rena Miller 67 of 291 West Sunset Drive died Saturday at her daughter Mrs Jennie Cain’s home in Rittman RD 1 where she had resided since October while convalescing. A Canal Fulton native she moved to Rittman 42 years ago after marrying Fred Miller a former Ohio Boxboard Company employee who died in 1959. She was a member of the U B Church in Rittman. Survived by three sons Lenore of Rittman Floyd of Barberton and Fred of Philadelphia a daughter Mrs Cain of Rittman and nine grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at Gillman Haines Funeral Home burial in Rittman Cemetery Rev F Dean Donaldson officiating.

Damages Sought in Ohio 548 Bridge Collision Suit

Russell Ross of Doylestown seeks 20000 damages from Etta M. Amstutz administratrix of Elmer J. Amstutz estate in Wayne County Common Pleas Court. The head on collision on Ohio 548 occurred Sept 12 on a bridge as Ross alleges the Amstutz car was nearly stopped and the truck approached leading to the crash.

Polio Vaccine Clinics Set in Wayne County Rittman

January 24 and 27 mark mass polio vaccination days for Wayne County residents. A team of doctors and nurses will operate at Rittman High School from 1 to 7 p.m. to provide Sabin oral vaccine. Dr Cahit Chorba and pharmacist Donald Stepfield lead the local program endorsed by the Wayne County Medical Society and the County Pharmaceutical Association.
