Cleveland Press editor John Kirkpatrick reports a lengthy call with fading, disconnecting lines in Rittman as he checks northeastern Ohio phone service. He notes the Rittman Citizens Committee’s fight for better service and questions the impact on local business and regional communication.
The U S Civil Service Commission offers a Substitute Clerk Carrier exam for the Rittman Ohio Post Office with pay starting at 1315 per hour. After one year of service pay rises to 1315 and then increments up to a maximum 1615 per hour. age 18 to 50 with veterans preferences. Applications due January 16 1950.
Three births announced in Rittman. A son to Mr and Mrs Robert Simonton on January 6, a daughter to Mr and Mrs Bernard Weideman on December 27, and a son to Mr and Mrs Roy Johnson on December 30.
Rittman council weighs sewage disposal options as state pushes pollution controls. Sanitation engineer E. D. Barstow estimates a new plant at 95 000 to 100 000 dollars with sludge drying tanks, or a temporary partial treatment at about 38 50. A full primary treatment would cost around 35 00. Current plant, built 15 years ago, disintegrated with pumping to Chippewa creek. Per capita flow about 14 to 15 0 gallons daily, higher than neighboring villages.
