Mr and Mrs William Matz of 12 S Third St host open house January 11 for 50th wedding anniversary. Married January 13 in Wooster, they have two children, three grandchildren including Betty Matz, and a great granddaughter. Mr Matz worked 34 years at Ohio Salt Co. Mrs Matz quilts. Also notes Mr and Mrs William Musser marked 55th anniversary at Main Street home. they moved from Cleveland five years ago, he gardens. guests include Goffinet family and others.
Publicity Committee of the Rittman Chamber of Commerce lists events. On Jan 10 a Saturday basketball at Doylestown occurs. Jan 19 Lions Club Ladies Night and Box Social. Jan 20 American Legion Stag Party. Feb 7 14 National Boy Scout events. Feb 19 Rotary Institute of International Relations begins with four Thursday nights at 8 p.m. at the High School Auditorium with speakers from Wadsworth Akron and Twinsburg circuits.
Mr and Mrs Paul Bracht of 22 S Fourth St welcomed a nine pound son, William Herman, at 9 22 a m January 1 at Wadsworth Hospital with Dr Pease attending. They won the merchants sponsored contest for the first baby of 1948 in Ridgman and may claim the prize offered by local merchants.
A string of birth notices from Wadsworth Hospital lists Linda Marie to Everett Workman and wife at Industrial Street. Charles Gordon Jr. weighing 10 lbs 9 ozs to Charles Gordon and wife. a son to Artis Caddity and spouse. Joseph Hirston to Ollie Hedbring. William Herman weighing 9 lbs 3 3/4 ozs to Paul and wife. other infants born Dec 19 20 and Dec 28 to various families in Doylestown and Thompson areas.
The Indians won their sixth of seven games, defeating Greensburg 72 37 here last Friday. Hardgrove led with 14 points as Rittman raced ahead early and built a sizable halftime cushion. Nine players scored for Rittman, with a 30 26 reserve win led by alker for 10.
Funeral services for Mrs Emma F Hornoff 83 were held Saturday at the Thard Funeral Home Wadsworth conducted by Rev Paul Ebert. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. She died at her daughter’s Liberty Street home where she had resided since December first. Surviving children include Mrs Amanda Kunkler Mrs Ida Mumaw Elmer Hornoff and Mrs Anna Collins and 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
The Rittman Legion basketball team has seven wins in eight starts with an average of 68 points per game. They beat Orrville V F W 174–48 and edged Wooster B and B 48–32. They open a three game series against Ohio Boxboard on Saturday January 17.
The Missionary Interest Circle of Milton Presbyterian Church will meet at 2 00 p m on Thursday January 15 at the home of Mrs Clarence Petit at 5 First Street.
The Rittman board of education discussed inviting bids for a new primary school around mid February. Architect Ronald Spahn displayed progress, including working drawings and a building model. The board aims to start construction promptly after receiving suitable bids. E D Reffert was rehired as clerk. the 1948 budget was presented and approved.
Bill Brown of 8 S Fourth St is acclaimed champion among 4500 bowlers in the WADC Headpin Tournament. The Akron Recreation alleys final Tuesday night roll off awarded Brown a $375 prize and a mammoth trophy. Jim Dulin of Akron and Nick Paveeli followed in the top ranks with 198 and 117 averages respectively, while Stephanie Senyak of Cleveland placed fourth. Brown works second shift at Ohio Boxboard Co and bowls for Browns Contractors in the Rittman City League.
Robert Freed, president, announced appointments to eight committees at the Chamber of Commerce directors meeting. Committees include Publicity chaired by Ernest Harrison with Al Geigey and Clyde Ambrose. Legislative chaired by Charles Rohrer with Gon Williams J H Fisher Harry Breneman and James Hile. Retail Merchants chaired by Homer Moore with George Sandrock Jack Daly A L Ebert and John Wenger. Recreation chaired by Rev D B Davidson with Clayton Kunkler F O Kariehl Lewis Hoover and G W Spaulding. Hospitality chaired by Ralph Overholt with Gladys Heiks Hugh L Strickland Alyne Butcher and Dr Herbert Yabroft. Utilities chaired by Tracey Shook with D F Potts E J McConnell W K Steiner and Paul Emch. Membership chaired by C G Haulk with Sam Ruble John Winkler Dr R Alexander Howard Dailey Roy Lutz Wade Rohwer. Agriculture chaired by E D Steiner as chairman.
