Scouts Distribute Civil Defense Booklets in Rittman
Scouts will distribute two Civil Defense booklets Survive Atomic Attack and Home Fire Fighting next Monday night. Roger Hessidence urges all families to keep the manuals in the home basement for emergency reference. The next Civil Defense meeting is Jan 15 at 8 p.m. in City Hall. A survey to identify fallout shelters 50 persons or more will be conducted by Engineering Associates of Wooster in Wayne and four surrounding e counties, to be completed by March 1962.

Two Local Drivers Receive Injuries
Tom D. Scheetz 19 of Rittman RD 1 and Emmett H. Griner 18 suffered cuts after their southbound cars collided on Medina County Road 51 north of the Wayne County line at 12 30 a m Saturday. Griner skidded off the pavement and was struck by Scheetz as Griner reentered traffic. Ohio Highway Patrol Medina charged both drivers with driving too fast for road conditions. Damages were listed as moderate.

Alpheus Goffinet of Rittman is celebrated as the town’s number one man for many firsts. He arrived from France in 1883, joined the Ohio Salt Company in 1888, helped drill the first salt well, and served as foreman of the box car loading crew. He recalls the plant’s early days, the first superintendent Cs Evans, and a legendary pay-and-pizza noon reward after breaking a loading record.

Rifle Blast On Route 604 Sparks Investigation
A New Year gunfire incident on Route 604 left a bullet lodged in a home wall after passing through two interior walls. Zelinger reported a 30-60 caliber bullet. no firing explanation given by P.T.E. Chief Merle Heffelman. The bullet may have traveled from Rittman to the Zollinger residence about one mile away. Heffelman warned that anyone firing such a gun will be arrested immediately.

Warning on counterfeit money in area prompts caution
Police Chief Merle Heffelman warned residents and merchants to watch for counterfeit currency. Richard Allen at the PCA plant received a counterfeit $20 bill from a Wadsworth bank on Tuesday. A surge of bogus money has been reported nearby including three counterfeit $20 bills with serials 0218418228, DS57700218A and D31268232A and numerous other fakes in $1 and $5 notes with listed serials.
