Council Pays Bills and Announces New Committees
Village council paid all back and present bills totaling 3211.48 and Mayor John Baldwin announced committees for the coming year at the regular meeting. J Brophy was sworn in as a new member. The meeting discussed a possible building code for Rittman, with no strong views, and the subject was sent to the service committee for further study. G H Clippinger presented the Rittman park board 1939 annual report, noting increased park use, popular Grandview for small picnics, new playground equipment, tree trimming, grass planting, reconditioned footwalks, a donated martin home funded by Marion Reserve Power Co, and a park fund of 1562 with expenditures 1526.53 leaving 35.47. Herald Morris reported need for stop signs at several intersections. an ordinance designating through streets was mentioned, but the safety committee was authorized to install signs where covered by prior traffic rules. Residents on Walnut St asked for street opening and grading, but action was deferred due to the treasury. The Gas Co was authorized to repair a gas leak under a newly paved through street. N Council received a request from Stocker to locate N Second St extension. All council members attended the meeting with Mayor Baldwin presiding.

Services for Doylestown Woman Conducted Friday
Funeral services for Mrs. Salome Bachman widow of Milton Bachman were held Friday at Frase Funeral home with Rev. Geo W Dittmar officiating. Burial was in Chestnut Hill cemetery. Mrs Bachman lived in Doylestown 60 years and was a Lutheran and Eastern Star member. Survivors include son James Bachman and stepson Robert Bachman both of Doylestown, sister Mrs Charles Kunkler of Wadsworth, 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

WPA Citizenship Classes Help Rittman Residents Gain Papers
WPA citizenship classes in Rittman, led by C L Henning of Orrville, meet three nights weekly. The program teaches civics and literacy to foreign born residents, with 15 average attendance and 35 peak, using textbooks provided by WPA. Several in the group earned citizenship papers in Wooster last month and last fall.

Doylestown High School cagers sealed the county Class B championship with a 31 24 victory over Fredericksburg for their 12th straight league win. Beech hit the deciding basket in overtime earlier as Doylestown beat Apple Creek 34 32 in a dramatic finish. Grenert led Apple Creek with 12 points while Stetler had 10 for Doylestown.

Heavy Midwest Snow Paralyzes 17 Ohio Highways
A major blizzard swept the midwest with snowfall from two to 17 inches and 40 mph gusts. Central Ohio bore the worst drifts as several streets became impassable. highway crews fought the conditions with snowplows. By day, milder temperatures began melting the heavy snow.

Mrs. R. V. Fredrick Involved in Toledo Area Crash
Mrs. R. V. Fredrick of Rittman suffered a fractured skull brain concussion and multiple injuries after a noon Saturday crash on route 23 north of Toledo. Her husband Mr. Fredrick had less severe injuries. The accident, in Michigan, involved a northbound car turning and stopping in the three lane highway.

The Rittman recreation board, created by village council in January, elected Boyd Miller as chairman at its first meeting in City Hall. The board plans regular monthly meetings, invites public input, and reviewed last year’s activities including tennis, baseball, softball, boxing shows, and field house use amid funding and staffing notes.
Indians Defeat Loudonville 25-14 Behind Tight Zone Defense
The Rittman Indians used a stout zone to defeat Loudonville 25-14, avenging a prior loss and tying the teams for the Central Buckeye lead at 5-1. Rosenberg and Ramstier led scoring for Rittman with eight and at least one key late basket, while Loudonville’s Cain was held to two baskets and a free throw. A large crowd packed the Rittman gym as reserves also won 28-4, tightening their division lead.
