City Council awarded two insurance contracts in a one hour session. Nationwide Company with Robert Semler of Rittman will provide fleet insurance at 793.75 for one year. Buckeye Union Casualty with the Wilson Agency will supply general liability for 3103.61 over three years. Council also named Rittman Savings Bank as city depository for two years and discussed a gas heating unit for City Hall.
Edward Bernhardt resigns from the city council effective soon after a Monday vote with regret. A new council member will be named at the February 25 meeting to replace him, as Bernhardt takes a credit manager post at Packaging Corporation of America in Evanston Illinois. Bernhardt served five years and chaired the finance committee. Neil Milford may assume finance chair, with the new member heading Milford’s utility committee. Also noted, L W Hayward of Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital Advisory Committee will attend March 11 to discuss the community role in a new hospital project.
A pancake and sausage supper is planned by the Knights of Pythias in Sterling for Monday evening. The event will follow the initiation into Knight rank of Pat Miller and Les Blatter of Creston at the K of P Hall in Sterling, with card games to follow.
Doylestown services were held Tuesday at St Peter and Paul Church for Carl Petit Jr five who died Saturday after a four month illness. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Carl Petit a brother Larry three sisters Linda Kathy and Carolyn grandmothers Mrs Clara Petit Doylestown and Mrs Anna Papp Barberton. Burial was in the church cemetery with Fr John H Frey officiating Monbarren Funeral Home arranged.
Services were held Tuesday for Jesse M. Danner 91 of Marshallville RD 1 who died Friday at Orrville Dunlap Hospital where he had been a patient the past week. A lifelong farmer, he lived mostly in this area except three years in Nebraska, son of John and Lavina Griffith Danner, and the last survivor of a three member family. He belonged to Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church in Orrville. His wife Nettie Jackson Danner died in March 1962. Survived by son Jay Danner of Marshallville, burial at East Chippewa Church Cemetery. Revs Franklin Lahr and Guy Buch officiated.
Three cars were damaged and one person injured in a Monday afternoon crash on South Main Street in front of Meade's Hardware. Delbert Ray Amstutz, 21, of Wooster was charged with reckless driving and will appear in Mayor's Court. Witnesses say he veered left of center, striking Glenn Griffin's parked car and another owned by Charles Gammell. Passenger Sonja Hill sustained head hand and knee injuries and received treatment at Wooster Hospital.
Bodager, a 30 year old native of Rittman, was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce at the Board of Directors meeting Tuesday night for a one year term. Other officers named include Glenn Parman as senior vice president and L K Burnett as vice president at large.
Firemen Tot Host County Group Wayne County Firemen's Association will meet in Rittman Monday evening with about 60 firemen attending. Program includes films on nuclear submarines and a grass fire in Los Angeles that burned over 70 homes. An unannounced speaker will appear. Auxiliary serves luncheon after the 8 p.m. meeting. Members planned a county meeting at Orrville on Feb 14 and will pay state and county dues.
Marilyn Grieves and Mary Bordacs defeated Akron East and Nordonia last Saturday at Nordonia High Schools debate tournament. Bonnie De Armitt and Marlene Trogdon beat Fairless High at Canton Glenwood the prior Saturday. Coach Thomas A. Davis notes steady season improvement and aims for county tournament at Wooster College February 23. This Saturday four students will attend an individual events meet at Smithville High with winners advancing to the statewide tourney in March.
The 31st Annual Lincoln Day Banquet by Wayne County Republican Executive Committee features Congressman William McCulloch as guest speaker at the Smithville Inn on February 21 at 6:30 p.m. McCulloch ranks on Judiciary and Small Business panels and is noted for civil rights and college loan work. Mrs. Carl Rehm won free tickets in a Wayne County vote forecast contest. tickets available from Clayton Hoover.
The teachers salary committee submitted three plans to raise base pay and adjust high brackets. Plan A adds 100 to base from 4400, Plan B adds 100 with smaller bracket increases, Plan C preserves base but boosts higher wage scales. Extra duty pay and coaching percentages were proposed, with Board study pending March. Budget, levy timing, and staffing changes were discussed, including library purchases and driver training.
Arthur Troyer, 22, of Wooster, is the latest addition to the Rittman police force replacing Donald Booth who resigned for an Akron insurance job. Troyer, married to Carol Barker, is on the eligible list after passing the civil service exam and has Navy service. City Manager Charles Mann and Police Chief Heffelman announced the appointment effective Monday.
The Planning Commission will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. to discuss access to the new Route 94, with local city officials, county commissioners, the county engineer, township trustees, and reps from Morton Salt Co, Packaging Corporation of America, and the Rittman Area Industrial Development Corp participating. The agenda also includes consideration of Bauer Allotment No 4, and chairman Edward Bernhardt is expected to resign as he moves from Rittman.
