A Friday incident describes a two year old girl found in a running station wagon in a crowded parking lot. The witness waited a while for the mother, planned to notify authorities, and urged others to take action to prevent harm. Karl Melenbacker, a longtime Rittman resident and former Packaging Corporation of America supervisor, is named acting City Manager for six weeks to three months. He will focus on the sewage plant open this month, street program, and West Home St. allotment, while devoting full time due to retirement. Melenbacker previously helped establish the city charter and civil service provisions and will coordinate local governance with experience in council procedures. He lives at 45 Fairmont St with wife Virginia and children including Mary, Karl William Jr., and daughters Linda Ann, Jane, and Kathrine.
The Rittman United Fund annual meeting elected Jim Howe president and Brad Troxel vice president with Mrs Thelma Gwaltney as secretary treasurer. Howe, a Morton Salt supervisor, moved to Rittman a decade ago and has held multiple campaign roles and community positions.

Mrs Marlys Smith was named assistant cashier by the First National Bank of Wadsworth. She first joined the bank in 1943, left in 1952, and returned in 19?6. She and her husband Elmer, a Rittman City Councilman, live in Rittman with their three children.
The Wayne Holmes Mental Health Center opened a Rittman branch on February 7 in the Stop and Goseta on Main Street. It will be open Wednesdays with staff including social worker Mrs Solomon Oliver and secretary receptionist Mrs John Gregory, with Dr Edward Kahn also available.
Rittman High School senior John Taylor, among 101 U S students, will travel to Italy for a week in July with the All American Youth Honor Band. He previously led the All Ohio Boys Band and earned first chair at the Morehead State University Clinic amid 20 states represented. He studies with a private tutor at Akron University and aims for North Texas State University in Denton for music education. He is the son of Mrs Lillian Taylor of 89 Woodland Ave.
Rittman City Council and police officials met Saturday afternoon at the police station to hear Visual Graphics Corporation representative Joe Sheldrick present the Crime Lab Photographic Equipment. The group discussed cost per 8 by 10 print, maintenance, service response, chemical changes every three weeks, and the need to send negatives elsewhere for development. The council recessed to decide at the February 12 meeting whether to proceed.
Barbara Knapic, a sophomore at Rittman High School, was selected by the Rittman Rotary Club to represent the club in Bolivia for ten months. The interview occurred in North Canton, Ohio, and she will study Spanish and English, with a 14 subject curriculum, starting in August.
The Rittman Lions met at Williams Restaurant with Frank Roys and Jay Rohrer leading the program. They announced a club visit to Doylestown Lions on Tuesday February 20 at 6 15 p.m. The Board of Directors schedules a meeting February 13 at 7 p.m. at Williams Restaurant.
