Funeral services for Clarence Huff 14 held at Rittman Baptist

Clarence Huff 14 son of Mr and Mrs Alvis Huff of Rittman R D was killed in a Saturday automobile crash near Rittman. Funeral was held Wednesday at 1 30 p m in Branigan Hall with Rev Carl Burnham and Rev William Eckles officiating. Burial in Rittman cemetery. Survivors include Ray Huff and Mrs Huff with injuries. Mary Baumgardner also injured. School honors listed for both seventh and eighth grades.

Erie Freight Train Hits Car Parked On Tracks

A 1930 Buick coupe was left on the Erie railroad near Industrial street crossing when a west bound freight train struck it at 4 55 am Thursday. The car, stolen from Smithville, wedged between tracks, was found abandoned with lights out. Marshal Heffelman investigated and linked thefts of two more cars from local lots to the incident.

Building Fund Pledges At First U B Church Renewed Sunday

Annual building fund pledges for the First United Brethren Church will be renewed Sunday during Sunday school and church services. The year ending February 1, 1940 shows the highest building fund payments in six years. Announcement of the dedication date for the new church addition is expected in coming weeks. Plastering and new heating are being completed.

Medina Man Fined For Driving Without License Plates

Medina resident Henry Schmelzer was arrested by Marshal Charles Hefelman Wednesday at 4 p.m. for driving an automobile without license plates. He pled guilty before Mayor John Baldwin Wednesday night and was fined $25 and costs.

Rittman motorists are warned to observe fire police and ambulance sirens and pull over. Several drivers ignored the ambulance siren Saturday causing delay reaching an accident south of Rittman. Future violators face fines. CHAS. HEFFELMAN

Baker resigns as mayor Baldwin named successor in Rittman

In a special council session Friday night Mayor Roy W Baker resigned citing personal reasons. Baker, elected in 1936 and unopposed last November, will remain as Justice of the Peace. John W Baldwin, longtime chief engineer at Ohio Boxboard Co, becomes mayor and will devote needed time to duties. Baldwin previously served on the board of education and holds engineering credentials.

Guest Conductor Ralph E Bush To Lead Friday Concert

Cleveland Heights educator Ralph E Bush will appear Friday night as guest conductor at the high school auditorium. He directs Heights High School band and orchestra and is a nationally known critic and judge. A trumpet trio will perform and the band will play four numbers from the contest list including Three Trumpeters, Robin Hood Fantasie, Bendel Pavanne, American Youth Overture, and The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise.

Jackson Day Banquet Accounts New Deal Support

Senator James E. Murray of Montana gave an accounting of the New Deal at the 8th annual Jackson Day banquet held last Thursday night at Zion Lutheran in Wooster attended by over 400 Democrats. John McWeeny of Wooster chaired in Ross Weygandt’s absence and announced his candidacy for congressman at large in May. Mrs. Harry Pontius of Orrville was toastmaster. Martin L. Davey hinted he may not run for governor. William L. Kennedy of Cleveland announced his candidacy for governor. Other potential candidates included Harold Moster of Cleveland and Jim Flynn of Sandusky.

Gas Company Honors Safe Drivers at Medina Meeting

The Ohio Fuel Gas Co awarded merchandise prizes and certificates to employees who drove company cars without an accident for one or more years. Recipients from Rittman included Joseph Street of Medina with an eight year award, Fred Haas, Howard Higgins, and Wilbur Hertel. A total of 166 were honored. O. V. Unger presided. John G. Herloh delivered the main address with speakers from the Highway Patrol and Medina officials also attending.

Houglan to Assume Branigan Hardware Management

The senior class of Rittman High school plans a Saturday waste paper collection to fund a Washington trip in spring.
