Twelfth Night burning aims to inspire community night
The Twelfth Night program on January 6 will close the Christmas season with a giant bonfire of unsold Christmas trees east of Industrial Street at 6 p m. Rev Charles Turner and Harold Brown led the planning with Rev J F Wheeling and local performers providing a talk and Christmas music. Firefighters will burn the trees supervised by Fire Chief Ron Gohardt as residents bring trees between 5 and 5 45 p m. The chamber calls it a solemn Magi themed observance to restore Christ into Christmas.

Funeral services held for Dwight Christian in Huntington WV
Dwight Christian 78 of Rittman and Huntington died Sunday at his son Eustace’s home in Stiling Avenue. A West Virginia native and retired farmer, he lived in Rittman two years. Surviving are sons Harvie of New Winchester Ohio and Gilford of West Virginia, daughter Mia Mary Jane Kitts of Rittman, wife Amy Grass in West Virginia, 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Howdy Longworth Civic Leader Laid to Rest
Howard Longworth a 56 year old Rittman resident died after a cerebral hemorrhage. He was district manager for Ohio Edison serving Rittman Sterling and Creston. Funeral services were held at Milton Presbyterian Church with Rev Dwight Davidson officiating before burial at Newman Creek Chapel Cemetery. He was active in Rotary Chamber of Commerce and various local organizations. He is survived by his wife Ruth Jane and several children grandchildren and siblings.

Railroads Promise Help for Motorists in Crossings Battle
At a Rittman council meeting, officials from the Baltimore and Ohio and Erie railroads pledged to place flagmen at crossings during switching to keep blinker lights active. Train crews were warned against blocking tracks and fined if crossings are tied up, with penalties paid by crews if needed.

Former Rittman Resident Dies in Florida at 82
Edward Schar, a former Rittman resident, died December 24 in Winter Park Florida at age 82. Funeral services were held December 29 at Pain esville Ohio with many relatives and friends from the Rittman Sterling area in attendance. He is survived by two daughters Eloise Bittner of Fairport Harbor and Eleanor Parcell of Winter Park.

Four More Winners in Town Drawing Gains for Merchants
Four more prizes were claimed by Rittman shoppers in the Merchants Drawing week. W. L. Hershey of 565 College Street Wadsworth won $50 while Mrs. Harold Rich Norman Winkler and Hester Britton each won $5. Hired Help And Pay Boost For City Hall Staff
City council approved a three percent salary increase for regular employees starting January first. Hourly workers receive five cents more per hour, boosting the operating budget by about two thousand five hundred dollars. The board created an Administrative Assistant to the Mayor and Board of Public Affairs, hiring Charles Mann of Wooster at four hundred fifty dollars a month. Mann moves to Rittman with his family. The sewer program for North Main Street and related water lines will be funded by assessments on benefiting property owners. Continued on Page 4.

Rittman Nominates 1959 Distinguished Citizen Candidate
January 10 is the deadline to nominate Rittman’s Most Distinguished Citizen for 1959. Letters go to Chamber of Commerce Secretary Harold Davis. The winner will be announced January 21 at the annual dinner at the American Legion Hall and receive a $50 savings bond and certificate. A $10 prize goes to the nominator. Judging is by three outsiders.
