Doylestown burglary suspects named in Lorain case

James Ringer and Steve Lore wah of Nova Ohio face burglary charges in Lorain after being linked to nine break ins or attempts in Doylestown. Wayne County Sheriff Glenn Rike said he will travel to Lorain to question them about the incidents.

Budget Passage Expected By City Council Next Week

The city faces a budget passage next Monday as the ordinance bud 960 looms as the big item, near last year’s 265000 spent by departments. Also on the agenda is the building permit ordinance, passed two readings and likely approved, increasing permit costs and usage time. Council welcomes new member Karl Melenbacker replacing Paul Mogler. incumbents Banders, Ashton Hall A Kinch, Ramsier and Bernhardt win another term.

Outstanding Citizen Letters Due Tuesday in Rittman

Nominating letters for the Most Distinguished Citizen of 1959 in Rittman must reach the Chamber by Tuesday January 12. Three out of town judges will review entries and the winner will be honored at the Chamber dinner January 21 at the American Legion Hall. A $50 savings bond certificate goes to the top citizen and $10 to the letter writer.

Plans For Private School To Aid Mentally Retarded Children

Dr William Lytle Wooster mayor spoke to Rittman Rotary about a proposed Wayne County private school for mentally retarded youths costing 65000. The plan targets 60 local children under 18 excluded from public schools by IQ rules. 35000 in pledges and space near Wooster. The Wayne County Society for Handicapped Children envisions four classes of 12, plus two public school classes for slow learners. Lytle led the society four years.

Trustees Seek Operating Levy for Township Firemen

Milton Township trustees adopt a resolution to place a May primary operating levy on the ballot to fund Rittman and Sterling firemen serving the township outside Rittman city limits. Levy amount and duration not yet set. Wilford Blatter elected chairman. Frank Yoder installed as new member.

Mayor Fines 17 in court for diverse offenses

Mayor C A Houglan fined 17 offenders for offenses including reckless driving disorderly conduct intoxication and driving while intoxicated. Sentences ranged from 10 to 105.50 dollars with several three day jail terms among the penalties. Erie Railroad Tragedy Claims Two Area Men

Two area men were killed Thursday while tamping ballast on the west bound track near the Packaging Corporation of America plant. Engineer Guy Shank and crew tried to warn them as a 130 car freight approached at 52 mph but the men did not hear the signals. Both victims were long time railroad employees and leaves behind families including wives, children, and relatives.

Commission Grants Final Approval to City Charter

The commission approved the charter with nine votes to two, rejecting a clause requiring compelling reasons for suspending rules in all ordinances under three readings. Officials plan to accelerate the charter’s effective date and extend current officials’ terms into 1961 to ensure experienced governance during the transition.

Watershed petition seeks creation of Chippewa Creek subdistrict

Chippewa Watershed officials expect the Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court to approve a January petition uniting Southern Medina County and northern Wayne County into a 2.71 million dollar flood control and recreation lake area. The plan would form the Chippewa Creek subdistrict to administer soil conservation flood control water supply and recreation development across 14 townships in 188 square miles. If approved the Muskingham watershed district would begin immediate administration.

Bond vote delay pushes decision to Sunday

The School Board postponed final action on placing a bond issue in the May primary ballot until a Sunday special meeting. They discussed three options to ease enrollment: add six to eight rooms at West Hill, an addition to First Street, or three rooms plus auditorium remodeling at the high school. Estimated costs range from 156000 to 200000.

Manslaughter Trial Nears End in Creston Crash Case

State rests in Wesley Johnson manslaughter trial over the August 21 Creston crash that killed Ronald Hooser and Larry Crow. Sixteen witnesses have testified. defense to present Friday as the jury expected Saturday. Johnson, 20, of Sterling, faces second degree manslaughter penalties from a $500 fine to 20 years.
