The shoemaker Conrad dreams Christ will visit his shop. A benevolent sequence unfolds with a worn pair of shoes, food for a traveler, and a homeless child. A heavenly message arrives: I came three times, I am the beggar, the child, and the traveler.
A survey of Rittman School System reveals one in four seventh graders do not graduate. Over four terms 96 students quit, with causes including work permits, marriage, and parental demand. Officials consider questionnaires to uncover reasons and curb the trend.

Rittman churches plan Christmas services this Sunday with cantatas and pageants. First Brethren Church hosts a morning cantata Night of Miracles and a combined Sunday school service, while Calvary Baptist and First Baptist outline special Christmas programs and scripture-based lessons for all ages.
The Jaycees planted a 25 foot blue spruce in front of City Hall this week. Freed's wrecker delivered the tree, Ohio Edison dug a four foot hole, and the Chamber of Commerce joined the Jaycees to string lights funded by profits from the fall Carni-Fair.
Four town meetings will be held next year to present a comprehensive planning program for the city. William Cline of Vogt Ivers and Associates outlined the plan to the Planning Commission and said the Cincinnati firm won an 11 200 contract. The survey includes maps land uses five year capital program zoning subdivision rules annexation recommendations and steps to implement proposals. Work awaits federal aid for 66 percent of the cost and will begin after approval.
Contribute to Fund First Brethren Church has sent a check for $900 to the Foreign Missionary Society of the Brethren Church for the support of Dr. Austin Robbins, missionary dentist in Africa. Support also was given in 1961 to Mr and Mrs Edward Miller in Brazil and Robert Cover in Argentina.
Merchants Committee chair David Wright says the winner of a Christmas season promotion trip to New York City is not yet claimed. Ticket 23495 remains active with Wednesday noon as the deadline before drawing another ticket. Mrs Jerry Lambert has claimed a $100 cash prize. William Baker and others received smaller awards.
A fire at the Beery residence caused an estimated $500 in damage. Firefighters from the local department arrived promptly and extinguished the blaze with no injuries reported. The cause is under investigation.
Sixteen volunteers from the fire department answered the alarm at the firehouse and quickly fought a blaze saving a house from major damage. The incident occurred during a regular weekly meeting.
Santa Claus arrives at the Rittman Fire Station at 6 30 PM on Friday bringing 800 boxes of goodies for children 12 and under. The event is supported by the Recreation Advisory Council and local volunteer firemen who will assist and be on hand.
Edgar VanGilder of 129 Meadowvale reports a rapid wave of calls after a small classified ad about a girls bicycle last week. The ad urged readers to call 925-4040 for easy money through classified selling.
Mrs Cora Lee attended the funeral Monday for Mrs Lyman Hartman who died last week at the Home for the Aged in Upper Sandusky. Lyman Hartman, her husband, was well known in Rittman. Burial was in Wadsworth.
John Blankenship of Rittman pleads guilty to four counts of grand larceny in Wayne County Common Pleas Court for stealing about 5000 in scrap metal from Packaging Corporation salvage yards. Judge Adrian Muller orders pre sentence investigation and keeps him in jail. Warrants out for Robert Boyce and Elijah Spencer of Rittman for questioning in the thefts.
Local drive responds to the Bloodmobile program with Jan 2 call for donors. Legion Hall hosts food January 21 as nurses and doctors assist in Rittman and Doylestown community effort led by recruiting chair Glen Butler. Various volunteers handle registration, transportation, canteen, staffing, and typing.
