Local Christmas window decorations draw a child’s wonder as families share holiday plans. Military moves bring sons home from Mountain Home Idaho and Lt. bases in Texas and Maine, with arrivals and departures noted for Jan. 2 and Dec. 28. Community groups, library events, and holiday gatherings fill the town, including a Welcome Wagon Club meeting, cantata at Kent State, and gift exchanges for Grandmothers Club.
Blood donors are urgently needed to meet a quota of 125 for the Bloodmobile at the American Legion Hall on January 2. Mrs. Glen Butler, recruiting chair, urges those not contacted but able to donate to call 925 3776 or contact Mrs. Harry Ditch at 925 4736. Local towns rally with volunteers from Doylestown Sterling Creston and Rittman to support the drive, with doctors and canteen staff ready, and a noon luncheon for workers.
Junior High School notes honor roll for spring term. First honor roll includes Linda Firis. William Hershey aged 78 longtime resident of Rittman area died at his Columbus home Tuesday afternoon He was found by his wife after she returned home from a short absence His farm work in the 1920s preceded later home building and a 1936 move to Columbus He belonged to Evangelical United Brethren Church Survivors include wife Edna M two daughters Mrs Ethel Mae Wilcox Birmingham Ala and Mrs Ruth Knight Columbus one son Roscoe Cincinnati one sister Ada Longnecker Lancaster Pa and eight grandchildren.
Santa arrives by pony sleigh at the Ben Franklin Store from 4 to 6 pm on Saturday night. He will greet youngsters and hear Christmas wishes while reindeer rest at the North Pole preparing for Christmas Eve.
PTA President Ted Hanson criticizes the REA stand on room mothers at a board meeting. REA president Donald Ritchie says they support room mothers in principle but favor voluntary involvement, with REA and PTA potentially coordinating outside the board. The board also acted on coaching, purchasing, travel, and program support items.
Santa will distribute 800 boxes of goodies at the fire station on Friday December 22 starting at 6 30 pm. Candy gum fruit nuts and toys will be packed beforehand for children up to 12 by Recreation Advisory Council members with help from Rittman clubs students and firemen. Mrs Charles Mann leads with assistants Mrs James Dolan Mrs William Maus Mrs Charles Arnold and Mrs Jay Rohrer seeking additional volunteers.
Two blasts near Rittman and surrounding countryside shook the area on Wednesday at about 5 30 pm. Reports say jet planes breaking the sound barrier caused the loud noise and rattled household goods, with doors opening and alarms triggering.
Winning tickets entitle two people to an all expense paid trip to New York City and $400 in cash for other winning tickets. Hold onto tickets after the drawings, as unclaimed prizes must be claimed within nine days. Merchants in Rittman announce the drawing details at participating stores on Commerce Avenue and local outlets like the Franklin Store.
RHS Rittman High School announces honor roll for the second six weeks. Seniors Eddie Weideman and Doris Bauman plus junior Marsha Harris earned all A's. Freshmen Margaret Goodhart Rita Hessidence Kathy Melenbacker among top scorers.
Two Rittman men pleaded innocent at Wayne County Grand Jury arraignments last week. John Blankenship, 29, denied thefts of at least $4,000 in scrap metal from the Packaging Operation plant and returned to county jail with a trial set for December 18. Raymond Napier, 33, pleaded innocent to assault with a knife. His trial is January 5.
