Holiday shopping humor and local club events fill this page. Lions Club meets at 6 30 PM at the Legion Hall. Parish and garden club activities include gifts for Indonesian students at Harvard and a Christmas luncheon. School board and auxiliary events, birthday reminders, and anniversaries highlight a busy December in the Rittman area.
Harold Davis of Rittman was appointed Acting Administrator of Community Osteopathic Hospital at Orrville in a Dec 1 meeting. He replaces Arthur Zeller who departs Dec 15 for a Des Moines hospital. Davis, board chair for two years, brings accounting and public practice background to guide the emergency transition.
City Manager Charles Mann named Jerry Whims and Ivan Ramsier as co directors to share duties after Homer Pyle resigns effective January. Whims, a junior high teacher and coach, will oversee swimming pool facilities. Ramsier, a post office employee, will run the Little League and summer programs. division and playground duties to be split pending a decision.
A. L. Ebert of Rittman will provide free turkeys to needy area families. Deserving households need only visit Ebert Electric and register with Mrs. Maxine Wenger at the address given before December 20. No other commitments required.
Mrs. Bobby Wheatley was treated for eye leg and forehead bruises at Wadsworth Hospital Nov 30 after her car rolled over on Route 5 just northeast of County Road 209 north of Doylestown. A Wayne County deputy cited her for reckless driving.
Monday night organizational meeting set the stage for December swearing in of new and reappointed officials. Mayor Houglan led oaths for Clerk Maxine Leatherman and council members Avery Kinch Ashton Hall John Simonton Karl Melenbacker Andrew Bauders and Edward Bernhardt Simonton is the sole new member. Hall named council president and Len Over reappointed treasurer while City Solicitor Rhonemus will earn 1800 annually. Bernhardt and Kind remained on Planning Commission and Parks Board respectively. additional seats to be filled. Ernest Ward re elected to Cemetery Board for three years. Committee chairs named with Bernhardt finance Bauders utilities Simonton streets and alleys Hall safety Melenbacker drainage Kinch legislative.
After 23 years of service Mr and Mrs Aaron Peachey retire as Administrator and Matron of the Mennonite Old People's Home in Rittman. The couple hosted a farewell tea amid memories of residents from Canada to Germany and a 1938 rebuild, noting the home welcomes all desiring care and payment by month. New administrators Clayton Sutter and family prepare to lead, while the Peacheys plan a Florida winter and family reunions near Ohio with Ursula Lichti returning for a visit.
City Council approved multiple pay raises for Autran city staff including a $50 monthly bump for City Manager Charles Mann and a new sick leave benefit of 125 days per month of service with a 30 day max. Police, clerical, and department heads receive varied monthly, hourly, and annual increases across departments.
Den 1 opened and closed the meeting led by Den Mother Mrs Harold Youmans. Wolf Badges were awarded to Jeff Parkinson Bradley Bodager Timmy Boreman Jim Heffelman Tom Firis Gregory Firis Darryl Rastorfer Billy Bennett Bobby Heape Doug Hammond and Richard Orr. Gold Arrows went to Jimmy Dolan Richard Orr Bobby Heape and John Bauman. Silver Arrows were earned by Jeff Hisem Glen Adams Richard Orr Bobby Heape and Richard Meade. Denver Badges were given to Jimmy Dolan Joe Dawson Jim Heffelman and Herland Reynolds. Bobcats badges went to Gary Rood Bob Wright Dale Winkler and Gary Crank. One year pins were awarded to many scouts including Jeff Hisem Alan Nolt Glen Adams Larry Marty James Donaldson Neal Heffelman John Hobell Daryle Emch Roy Ferguson Robert Moore John Stillwagner Dale Meade Donald Rice Rodney Lance. Den Mother Mrs Harold Youmans led Den 1 in opening and closing. attendance flag won by Den 6 Mrs George Rastorfer. Mrs Frank Hisem is general chairman for the Pack Christmas party December 19 at 7 p.m. at Diversion Hall. Each boy should bring a 50 cent gift and two decorations for the tree.
The Sterling Branch of Commercial Banking and Trust Compass plans an open house Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm to showcase its remodeled headquarters opened in 1900. A marble front new paneling and fixtures refresh the interior. Door prizes include savings bonds and refreshments will be served. Assistant Cashier Alvin Swinehart leads the branch.
Two 16-year-olds appeared Friday before Judge Myron Breneman. One was placed on probation until he turns 18 after threatening a man with a revolver. The other 16-year-old paid 25 dollars plus costs on four counts including assault intoxication disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. A 14-year-old Creston boy was put on probation for one year for stealing 12 dollars from the boys locker room in Creston.
A local promotion by Rittman merchants offers an all expense paid trip to New York City for a winner and a guest, including hotel stays and a visit to New York Lights. The prize package also includes 400 in cash. Tickets are sold in various stores with a drawing on December 18. winning numbers posted on store windows.
Friends of the Library and librarians seek resident opinions on library hours to improve service. Discussion topics include morning hours and Saturday openings. Those with ideas may call Mrs Holt at 925-1571 or Librarian Hilliard at 925-2761.
Police question a youth this week after a burglary at Alvin Nieman home on View Boulevard Tuesday night. The intruder used a window to gain entry and stole money and candy from the residence.
