Wayne County auditor Glenn Newland reports a July 8 BTA directive requires a higher real property tax abstract to reflect inflated values. Homeowners in Rittman face a 5 to 10 percent tax increase this year as the county seeks to correct valuation disparities. Newland did not approve the Oct 7 abstract which totaled 294,994,540 and included new construction and oil and gas assets.

Alphas H Smotherman 52 of 8114 Doylestown Rd Sterling died Saturday at Wooster Community Hospital after a three month illness. He was born January 27 1923 in Ironton Missouri and lived in Colorado before moving to the Rittman Sterling area. An Army veteran of World War II he worked 27 years in the packaging corp container dept in Rittman. He belonged to V F W Post 1610 and First Brethren Church in Rittman. Surviving are his wife Erma two daughters Jean and Mrs Pat Gaborsky. seven brothers and two sisters. two grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday Dec 9 at Gillman Funeral Home Rittman Rev Robert A Russell officiated. Burial in Rittman Cemetery.

Raymond Seifert Morton Retiree
Raymond J. Seifert 75 of 27 Orchard St. died Tuesday night at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. Born July 15, 1900 in Wayne County to Erasmus and Margaret Keyser Seifert, he lived in Wooster before moving to Rittman 15 years ago. He worked 20 years at Morton Salt Co retiring in 1965 and previously at Buckeye Aluminum Co. in Wooster. He attended Calvary Assembly of God Church in Orrville and was a Rittman Garden Club member. Surviving are wife Oneta, two sons Donald of North Canton and Robert of Fort Wayne, Ind., daughter Joanne (Richard) Welling of Orrville, brother Earnest of Lodi, sisters LaVonne Marchant, Edna Gartshore, and Mary Mullett, five grandchildren. Their 50th wedding anniversary was observed August 16, 1972. Additional notes mention realty development plans and community activities in Rittman.
