Potential donors are urged to call 925-2661 for a Dec. 13 Bloodmobile visit in Ritt while transport can be provided if needed. Numerous local club gatherings and hospital updates fill the community note with holiday events and hospital recoveries.
The Press requests old photos of local events and people for a January fifth city commemorative issue. Contacts include Mrs. Charles Miller at 61 Erie Street G H Clippinger and George Sandrock at South Main Street and Don Stepfield at Grandview Blvd. More submissions will be returned after printing.
Mayor O A Houglan and Police Chief Merle Heffelman announce a week long crackdown on fines. Forty five violators face execution for fines and costs as part of the effort. Some offenders pay installments, while others face jail or 90 day sentences in Wooster County Jail. Officers will serve papers and collect due fines.
Santa Claus visits Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. under Rittman Chamber of Commerce sponsorship. He will tour schools in the morning, greet youngsters at Juan south end in the afternoon, then move to uptown with reindeer and sleigh to hand out goodies until 9 p.m. He returns December 23 for the community children’s party at the fire station to hand out presents.
Annual Christmas party for Morton Salt Company employees and families at the VFW Kolony in Wadsworth on Tuesday evening December 20. Sponsored by United Mine Workers Local 12081 and the Morton Salt Company. Toys for children, refreshments, door prizes, and fun for all.
Graveside funeral services will be held Friday in Lorain for Larry Earl Matthews three day old son of Rev Earl and Phyllis Matthews of Sterling. The infant died Tuesday afternoon at Wooster Community Hospital after birth Saturday night. The two surviving triplets Gary Lee and Terry Paul are progressing satisfactorily. Rev Matthews is pastor of the Sterling Evangelical United Bret ern Church. Mrs Matthews was the former Phyllis Schram of Elyria. The Matthews came to Sterling from Lakefork Pastorate in Ashland County. Larry is survived by two infant brothers and a sister, plus maternal and paternal grandparents.
A Creston man, Carl Begert, rushed to rescue Jimmy Carpenter after the child, 7, tangled a plastic curtain and drapery rope around his neck and near a rubbish fire. Begert smothered the flames, suffered head burns, and freed the boy who sustained first degree burns to his shoulders back and arm. Begert will be off work for a period but was not hospitalized.
Nominations for the Most Distinguished Citizen Award of 1960 are now being accepted. Mail letters detailing volunteer work to Chamber Secretary Marguerite Burger at 1612 North Main Street, Rittman, Ohio. Entries due January 9 with a $50 savings bond prize to the winner and a $10 award to the letter writer. past winners are listed.
Chambers of Commerce sponsor the Twelfth Night tree burning on January 5 at 6 p.m. near the swimming pool. The event will feature a large Christmas tree bonfire, Christmas music, and a talk by a local minister, building on last year’s observance with the Ministerial Association.
City workers receive a three percent wage hike effective January 1 1961. The new Charter form of government saw the first council meeting with swearing in of city officials including City Manager Charles Mann and Clerk of Council Maxine Leatherman. Additional appointments to boards and commissions were made or approved and future appointments planned. The council also discussed holiday pay for policemen and amended water and sewer rate ordinances with procedural changes for meeting dates and check signatures.
Roy Moffet district manager of Ohio Central Telephone Corporation warns businessmen about an advertising directory firm soon in the Rittman area. Salesmen may ask to renew a yellow pages pad. Moffet notes many think they mean the telephone directory and that the solicitation has no relation to the book.
A seven year old boy says he deserves a painting set with pictures to paint and mentions his four year old sister who wants a doll buggy. The note from Eugene and Mary Lynn Brickey adds they will leave food as well.
A collection of handwritten letters from children asking Santa for toys and expressing good behavior. The notes include names, ages, addresses in Ohio and other details. Each child lists desired presents such as dolls, trains, toy guns, rifles, football sets, boards, and other gifts, along with invitations for cookies and milk.
