United Presbyterian Women plan officer elections at the first meeting next Thursday with an 8:45 a.m. breakfast in the church basement led by Joan Lance and hostess chair Bessie Gillman. St Francis Xavier Mission Circle No 9 meets at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Mrs. William Ritter's home. all parish women invited. Various anniversaries and birthdays are listed among local families, with social and church notices ahead of continued coverage on page 4.

Postpone UF Drive Until Strike Settled

Directors of Rittman United Foundation postponed indefinitely the drive to obtain operating funds for nine local health welfare and recreation groups. UF President C E Rhonemus cited the ongoing strike as hindering fundraising and said a decision on future campaigns would come when the strike ends. He noted PCA payroll issues complicate timing and that rescheduling could occur if the strike settles within a week or ten days.

Joint Meeting Planned for Rittman Wadsworth Hospital Talks

Members of the Rittman Hospital Committee join forces with Wadsworth counterparts for a Wednesday session chaired by Laurence Hayward to review findings from six months of hospital surveys. The Akron consultant Dr Louis Block had urged a new 100 bed facility costing about 2.8 million to replace the aging 84 bed downtown Wadsworth hospital.

Library Receives Two Local Gifts

The Rittman Library received two gifts this week from local donors. The Three Arts Club provided a new book cart and returned books. Mr and Mrs O Kanehl gave a one year subscription to the Wall Street Journal, a daily financial periodical long requested.

Sterling kindergarten registration date and location

Registration for Sterling kindergarten takes place Tuesday September 4 in the Sterling EUB Church basement. Hours are 8:30 to 11 am and 1 to 3:30 pm. A parent must accompany each child and bring a birth certificate if not already presented.

Optimistic Mediator Seeks Pact At PCA Meeting

Federal Mediator Edward OBrien said he is optimistic a settlement will emerge at a Tuesday meeting between Packaging Corporation of America and Local 150 International Brotherhood of Pulp Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers. PCA would retroactively pay hospitalization insurance for Aug and Sept totaling 50 000 while employees pay 185 each. Union President Alvin Johnson called the move a step in the right direction as discussions focus on working conditions choice of carrier and recall date. Pickets at the Rittman plant prompted a court injunction and a later hearing to review the appeal.

Rittman Upground Reservoir Site Chosen

Council selects southwest of Rittman as preferred upground reservoir site covering 303 acres between Chippewa creeks. Morton Salt owns 58 acres, Fred Straubhaar 55 acres, with land purchase or lease planned. Stanley Engineering cites lower seepage, purer water, and domestic use potential after treatment.

Showdown On Levy Vote Is Sept 10

The council advances an ordinance to place a one mill city operating levy on the ballot with a decisive Sept 10 meeting looming. Councilmen Ashton Hall and John Simonton oppose the levy urging budget cuts instead. Finance Chairman Ed Bernhardt pushes the measure noting about 4 to 7 dollars per year per household. The plan would raise roughly 16400 while current cuts total at least 26000 annually, risking a red balance. a two thirds vote is required to place the ordinance on the ballot.

Local Singers At Ohio State Fair Perform

The Choralers Attman High School girls ensemble directed by Mrs Carnion Warren will sing at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus. The group has rehearsed a month for the performance and includes Barbara Lewis, Marsha Harris, Kay Carey, Barbara Hauenstein, Jane Melenbacker, Rita Hessidence, and Lorrane Jensen. Linda Langton accompanies on piano.

Grass Fire Control Praised By Mann

Rittman area residents heard from City Manager Charlies Miann at Viendas Corneil session praising community fire safety. He noted a critical hazard level with recent grass fires, thanked the public for careful supervision, and urged continued caution. Firemen were summoned five times since Friday, four for small grass fires and one for a burning television.

Infant Dies in Rittman Funeral Home Service

Infant die s born in West Virginia dies Tuesday afternoon at Wadsminneapolis hospital. Parents Mr and Mrs Jesse Metheny of Rittman survive with siblings Kathy Jean and Karen Lee. Fraternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Harold Sirole and maternal great grandmother Mrs Minnie McCabe of West Virginia. Gravesite services were held Wednesday at Babyland in Rittman Cemetery conducted by Rev Charles Turner. Gilman Haines Funeral Home handled arrangements.
