North Street playroom to yield two temporary classrooms

The Board of Education approved converting the North Street school playroom into two temporary classrooms to ease overcrowding at an estimated cost of 10 000 to 12 000 dollars. Work will start after further investigation and approvals.

Union Rejects Two Year Contract By 582 289 Vote

The International Brotherhood of Sulphite Pulp and Paper Mills Workers rejected Packaging Corporation of Americas two year contract by 582 to 289. Main points included a five cent wage rise this year and next, four weeks vacation after 23 years, a $500 life insurance with no premium rise, better hospitalization with no added cost, plus 39 working condition items. Union cites insurer choice and recall method as sticking points and warns strike could continue without a different carrier. Federal mediator O Brien calls the vote disappointing but notes weekend talks reached full agreement on all issues. The injunction restricting pickets remains in force at Wooster plant.

Offset Printing Press Added for 50th Anniversary Plan

Rittman Press prepares for its 50th anniversary with a new Harris offset press capable of 17 by 22.5 inches print sheets and color output. It is the third machine added this summer, enabling cost savings on repeat orders. Plans for a two color anniversary edition were outlined, with events and further details to follow.

Ben Cassady 64 Buried Thursday in Rittman Church

Ben F Cassady aged 64 of RD 1 Rittman died early Tuesday after a long illness. A native of Wayne West Virginia he lived in Rittman 30 years. Survived by wife Mary M two sons James and Major Clifton four daughters Virginia Black Opal Hirries Maxine Dugnan Lois Higgenbotham two brothers Taylor and Emery Cassady eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services held Thursday at Wesleyan Methodist Church with burial in Rittman Cemetery. Gillman Haines Funeral Home in charge.

Planning Survey Gets First Public Hearing

Thirty five Rittman citizens attended the initial town meeting on a two year comprehensive planning survey. Richard Dickman outlined steps including base maps population forecasts housing and facilities analysis and zoning changes. The plan costs 11200 with federal funds covering most of the cost and next progress report due in four months. A September attitude survey will gauge resident opinions to aid the study.

White Elephant Sale Scheduled Friday in Rittman

The White Elephant Sale, yearly by the Rittman Booster Club, will occur Friday August 24 at Diversion Hall after the Valdi Gras parade prize ceremony. Auctioning starts about 7 15 pm with new and nearly new items donated by locals, with contact numbers for donations.

First Day Enrollments Reach 1700 In Ruttman Schools

On Tuesday September 4 about 1700 students will report for the new school year in Ruttman schools, led by Superintendent W H Hauenstein. Enrollment exceeds last year by over 100, with high school numbers topping 400. Classes start for grades one through twelve, with kindergarten conferences and full-time start September 12.
