Union Rejects Two Year Contract By 582 289 Vote
The International Brotherhood of Sulphite Pulp and Paper Mills Workers rejected Packaging Corporation of Americas two year contract by 582 to 289. Main points included a five cent wage rise this year and next, four weeks vacation after 23 years, a $500 life insurance with no premium rise, better hospitalization with no added cost, plus 39 working condition items. Union cites insurer choice and recall method as sticking points and warns strike could continue without a different carrier. Federal mediator O Brien calls the vote disappointing but notes weekend talks reached full agreement on all issues. The injunction restricting pickets remains in force at Wooster plant.
