Recreation levy on ballot without residents' permission

Council approved placing a .5 mill recreation levy on the November ballot, a five cent tax per $100 valuation, while noting streets north of W Sunset and south of Home Ave remain unaccepted and unopened for public use with warning signs "Travel at your own risk." The village faces other fiscal and infrastructure notes including a $125,000 sewer bond on the ballot and insurance concerns for the cemetery.

Ready plans for 1 266 docal youngsters return to school

The article outlines delayed start plans for 1 266 elementary and high school students next Wednesday with doors opening at 8 and dismissal at 2 30. Teachers begin Tuesday with a breakfast then principal meetings. Freshmen orientation at the high school and kindergarten parent meetings on Tuesday set early conditions. Ohio enacts motor bike and scooter license law

Police Chief Charles Heffelman says Ohio's new motor bike and motor scooter license law is in effect. The process requires vision and traffic sign tests, a $0.50 temporary permit, a driving exam by state patrol, and a $1 license certificate. Appointments are by telephoning the State Patrol in Wooster, with exams at Memorial Hall Buckeye St from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Wednesday.

Rittman Seville Football Clinic Teaches Football Skills

Rittman residents may attend the Tuesday night football clinic to boost local sports support. The session runs 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with coach Homer Pyle leading demonstrations of offensive and defensive formations and a review of game rules. Arnon Reeder directs a 20 minute band show before the scrimmage between Rittman and Seville. Afterward spectators meet coaches and players in the cafeteria.

The Rittman Public Library will be closed all day Monday September 2 in observance of Labor Day. The library will open at 3 p.m. Tuesday and will offer Saturday evening hours from 6 30 to 8 30 p.m. beginning Saturday September 7.

Freeway Work Begins in Wayne County on North-South Route

Wayne county will host the initial construction of the North-South Ohio Freeway. Work starts September 5 on a four mile section a farm two miles south of West Salem on Route 301. The 340 million dollar project will connect the Great Lakes with the Ohio River.

Utility Commission Tests Long-Distance Lines

The Ohio Public Utilities Commission installed a traffic order at the local telephone office to measure average times for placing long distance calls. The $1,750 machine, active now through Friday, will monitor toll line overloads and call completion times in Rittman after resident complaints.

Rittman to Add Major Commercial and Post Office Projects

Civic leaders there forecast a commercial building surge as three new structures costing at least 300000 unfold in the Rittman business district. A new 135000 post office is planned within a year, with construction to start this fall and completion aimed for 1959.

Services Held for Sterling Mailman Carl Livingstone

Funeral services were held for Carl Livingstone of Sterling at Gillman Funeral Home. A rural mail carrier for 23 years, he worked in Sterling after moving from Holmesville where he served 10 years. He belonged to Evangelical United Brethren Church, Knights of Pythias, and the Rural Letter Carriers Association. He is survived by Opal his wife a daughter Dana three sons Paul of Fremont and Dean and Glenn at home two sisters Ruth Miller Wooster and Elva Wagner Millersburg a brother Stanley Holmesville and four grandchildren.

Headless Horse Legend Told In Rogues Hollow Tale

Anthony Paridon relays a Rogues Hollow legend about a Headless Horse seen near a low hanging oak by Route 65. Michael Walsh, son of a long-time miner, supposedly encountered the eerie site while returning from Clinton with mule shoes, a story framed as local lore.

Pool to Close After Labor Day

The Rittman pool will close for the year after Labor Day according to recreation board chairman Russell Riggs. Officials warned that anyone trespassing or damaging the pool property will be arrested and brought to court.
