The Rittman Press will print its three millionth copy next week as the paper approaches its 45th year of publication. Sidney Hoover launched the paper on September 18 1912 and the current issue will push total weekly editions to 2340 by year end.
Students in Rittman will have a day off Tuesday as Tuesday is designated a school day at the county fair in Wooster. All pupils will be admitted free on Thursday.
A Maibach's picnic features Chuck McCoy racing for a fly ball and making a circus catch only to learn two outs and two runs had already scored. The mishap ends with the McCoys leaving town. Nearby a balloon landing from Akron Naval Air Station due to bad weather shocks Sterling residents. Park superintendent Alpheus Goffinet notes kids leave clothing items in parks. The item ends with a reflective verse asking why people go to church.
The Board of Education reports spending to date from the May approved bond issue of 160000 for adult education programs. Funds allocated by voters are being tracked as the education initiative progresses.
Rittman plans an adult night school at Rittman High School beginning Sept 17 with four courses in Mathematics English Typing and Shorthand. Enrollment limited to 30 per course at an $8 fee per semester. Registration Sept 6 to 16 at local outlets.
School teachers received small gifts of appreciation from local merchants during a Tuesday morning breakfast in the high school cafeteria. Speeches were delivered by Bill Maus of the Chamber of Commerce W H Hauenstein the school superintendent J C Morris of the Ohio Box board Company and other local businessmen. The PTA organized the event with Mr. and Mrs. Charles McCoy presiding.
The Rittman PTA plans its first meeting of the new school year for Monday Sept 16 at 7 30 p.m. in the high school with a social period. A State Patrol speaker will discuss bike safety and new motor bike laws, followed by introductions of Safety Patrol children and new badges.
Tales from Rogues Hollow recount counterfeit dollars, half dollars and dimes passed in the 1880s. Old-timers describe a steam press setup in a mine, using metal sheets shipped by railroad to mint bogus coins, then spread through local saloons and pockets.
Robert Walters of Sterling Avenue named new school patrolman by Mayor John Baldwin Walters replaces John Bellamy who has moved to Florida Walters is a retired Murton Salt Company worker and will be stationed at the square during school hours to assist children crossing the street
Police Chief Chas Heffelman urged motorists in Rittman to drive carefully as school starts. He said speed meters will monitor school zones and anyone exceeding 15 mph by even one mile will be arrested.
Diversion Hall will be open Monday Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6 30 to 9 starting Wednesday September 11 the change announced by the recreation committee.
Kenneth Selbee son of Mr and Mrs Boyd Selbee of 43 Greenbriar completed Marine Basic Training on September 6 at the Marine Corps Depot Parris Island South Carolina.
Over 500 attended Rittman second annual football clinic as coaches Homer Pyle and Ken Zeman explained formations and the band performed a 20 minute show. The booster club plans to reorganize at a Sept 10 meeting at the high school gym with officer elections and fundraising ideas while players sell Booster Club memberships.
The Daughters of America will hold a rummage sale this Saturday September 7 at 9 a.m. at the Fisher Plumbing Building corner of S Main and Elliott St. Contact Mrs Fern Sayre Mrs Clara Boling or Mrs Stella Boling to drop items. Pickup for rummage is Friday.
The Norwayne Booster Club raised about $500 from an auction at Norwayne High School last Saturday. Funds included $350 from the sale and food stand and $150 from cash contributions. Club president Bill Davis thanked helpers and residents for support. The money will help retire part of a $2,400 bleacher bill at Norwayne Football Field. Don Glessner, treasurer, Sterling, Ohio, asks for more contributions. Next activity is memberships sale, starting Sept 10 with a $1 fee and a $25 prize drawn at Norwayne’s last home game.
