District notes report a stalled Diver sion Hall parking project approved by council and school board with no work begun. Other items include a 1210.50 mayoral court fines, local fishing updates, a Bible class picnic, and residents owed tax refunds listed by Akron Beacon Journal.
Funeral services were held for Leland Harry Lendy 48 of North Third Street. He died Sunday from a heart attack in his automobile in Loyal Oak and was pronounced dead at Barberton Citizens Hospital. Born March 2 1911 in Rittman he spent his life there and worked at Hugh L Strickland Inc for 14 years. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Stars active in Rittman and Wooster Masonic lodges and related bodies. Survivors include his mother Altha and siblings Ralph B Florence Ady and Mrs Robert Hange and a niece.
Mike Boychi aged 74 of Copley died Saturday at Akron General Hospital after a brief illness. A Hungarian native and 52 year Akron resident, he retired from Mohawk Rubber Co nine years ago and was a part time farmer. He leaves his wife Ethel three sons Frank James of Akron William of Wadsworth five daughters Margaret Richtarcik Betty Kanish Ida Firis Helen Labunski Evelyn Buettner in California and Hungary and 14 grandchildren.
Arch Freeman Sr. was fined 104.50 and given 30 days in county jail by Mayor O A Houglan for stabbing Shir ley Trogdon at the Ramble Inn on South Main Street. Trogdon received medical care and Freeman's jail term was suspended on payment of the doctor bill.
The council heard no money for top soil and noted engineer Levers will resign September 1 to start a construction business. Ed Bernhardt urged a December finish, with candidates to be interviewed soon. Rats near the dump were discussed and an anti littering ordinance was advanced to second reading with fines for violators.
Nancy O'Brien and Gary Taylor will reign as king and queen at the ninth annual Mardi Gras Friday night parade beginning at 6 30 at Diversion Hall and marching to the public square where they will be crowned. Attendants include Chris Copley Debbie Morford Robert Wright and Billy Ullman. The event features 1900 ballots cast and multiple prize categories for costumes floats and vehicles.
The Board of Education signed a three year bus service contract with Harold Hoover at 8000 dollars per year, adding two new 60 capacity buses. Eight new teachers and a new high school principal were named, with potential one more junior high science position. Several school assignments and principals were announced along with milk purchase approval, book purchases and a cafeteria head cook resignation.
Blood donors are urged to give twice in September for Casey Jones of Doylestown who needs Type O Negative for a delicate operation at University Hospital Cleveland. Mrs Glen Butler in Rittman and Mrs Donald Glassner appeal for 25 and 150 donors, including many first timers, to meet the quota. Call 194 W. to donate.
Fire department responded Thursday afternoon to Semler Products on Salt Street. The small fire was extinguished before firefighters arrived on scene.
Rittman Boy Scouts in conjunction with the local police department will hold a bike registration and safety check at Diversion Hall on August 22 from 8 a.m. to noon and August 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. Scouts Master Robert Perrin and Committeeman Paul Wheeler lead the effort. Participants receive glow in the dark tape for front and rear fenders and a police safety rule book.
Police chief Merle Hef felman said more suspects will be questioned this week in the $1,300 Sleepy Owl theft. The August 2 incident saw $500 cash and $800 in liquor stolen as three strong suspects were released after alibis proved solid.
Two Rittman residents were fined in Mayor's Court after a fight at Dom's Cafe on James Osborne. James Osborne was fined 104 50 and sentenced to ten days in the county jail for striking several occupants. Clotine Clason, operator of the bar, was fined 14 50 for using disrespectful language to arresting officer Beecher Noble. Dominic Calabria, owner of the bar, was out of town when the fight occurred.
Robert West filed to run for the Board of Education in the upcoming November election after earlier saying he might not seek another term. He has served two years on the school board and was president for two years. He resides on Douglas Drive with his wife Lenore and their children.
Dale Younker of Sterling prepares to represent Wayne and Holmes counties in the All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron with 150 champions from around the world. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Harry Younker and will be a junior at Norwayne High School this fall.
The Rattman Chamber invites Santa Claus to visit on December 11 and 25, marking a rare public chance for northern Wayne County children to see him in person. The Chamber notes Santa has made annual Christmas visits since 1815, though earlier appearances were brief. The invitation letter from the Chamber of Commerce details the social visit and public interest.
