The Rittman Press prints a series on Rogues Hollow near Doylestown Ohio. Elders like Turp Collier recall a rough, colorful past with saloons and mills fading beneath trees. Coal Bank Road marks the Hollow’s origin, now a quiet winding drive along Silver Creek.
Timothy Kollert six year old son of Mr and Mrs Homer Kollert who was struck by a car in front of his home on Rt 24 March 30 is reported by his mother to be improving slowly He has not regained consciousness but seems more relaxed and smiles occasionally Mrs Kollert relies on prayer and therapy to aid his recovery.
Doylestown residents celebrate a weekend carnival sponsored by the American Legion Lions Club and the Fire Dept. The event runs through Saturday with nightly prize drawings including a $50 cash prize and a chance to win a new automobile. A Saturday kiddie parade features decorated bikes and pets, with prizes donated by local merchants.
August event calendar lists multiple reunions and picnics across large and small pavilions. Notable dates include Gerber on August 4, Mennonite on 7, Hatfield 11, Rich 15, and several gatherings on 18 and later weekends. Additional entries cover WBA and Brouse events, Graf, Rockenfelder, Wald, Auker reunions, plus Winter Mackey Grosh Yoder gatherings.
Sylvan Wiles, Rittman High School principal, submitted a letter of resignation to the school board. as of Thursday, the board had not yet accepted it. A reliable source says Wiles has worked for Investment Diversified Services this summer and plans to stay with the firm. The Mansfield area office serves northern Wayne County, and Wiles will reside in Rittman.
Miss Ohio will be crowned this Friday night August 3 at the Wooster Fairgrounds. Virginia Wenger of Rittman represents this area among ten Ohio entrants vying for the Miss America spot in September. Vaughn Monroe and other pageant names appear for the event.
One hundred eighty relatives and friends attended the Golden Wedding anniversary at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Gordon in honor of 50 years together. The day began with a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Ann's Church and included a noon meal at Macko's in Marion.
The Rittman Press increases yearly subscriptions from $2.50 to $3.00 effective for dues on or after August 1. Area weeklies already hit $3.00 to $3.50, while daily papers have raised several times in recent years due to higher costs.
Petitions to run for three Board of Education seats must be filed by August 7 with 25 signatures. Incumbents Melvin Goffiner and Lawrence Wilmot have announced. Frank Watson has not yet decided. Two other terms run through 1958. voters weigh past bond issues and school funding. Mardi Gras king and queen contest opens for Rittman area youngsters ages four to six with registration August 9.
Officials say the new high school addition likely will not be completed by the start of the fall term. Remodeling of the old building should be done, with shop and science rooms possibly ready for September. Winter completion for remaining rooms is probable due to manpower and weather delays.
The coming year projected enrollment in Rittman is about 1,266 students. The fourth grade leads with 138 pupils, while the senior class is smallest with 51. Breakdown shows kinder 100, first 120, second 113, third 126, fourth 38, fifth 134, sixth 100, seventh 78, eighth 96, ninth 04, tenth 84, eleventh 62, twelfth 51.
Twenty three names added this week under Mrs Bodager local chairman. Only 168 signed up toward the 200 needed for the Bloodmobiles visit on August 14. 116 actually donated from 135 who appeared at the April 4, 1957 visit. Call or visit Ohio Boxboard Co to schedule August 7 from noon to 5 PM.
Eight speeders were fined this week in Aayor John Baldwin's court. Names include L. R. Patterson, Robert Lockhart, Howard Workmar, Dale Massie, Thomas Ruble, D. A. Robertson, and Frank Adkins. Fines range from 5 to 15 dollars plus costs for most, with one $10 intoxication fine.
S F Allison vice president in charge of the Ohio Boxboard Company division has been re elected to the Fibre Box Association board. Ohio Boxboard operates plants in Cuyahoga Falls Middletown and Youngstown Ohio Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Plymouth Michigan and Lockport New York. Allison joined in 1945 and rose to general manager of the Container Division in 1953 and was elected vice president in 1954. He is a business administration graduate of the University.
Rittman police questioned Jack Stamper about a classified ad in the Rittman Press signed by Billy Wood claiming he drove the Stamper car in a Barberton accident. Mrs Stamper denied knowledge and police noted changing stories. Stamper was fined $100 and jailed three days for driving while intoxicated and his wife filed for divorce.
Football coach Homer Pyle announces fall drills start August 20 with two-a-day sessions at 9 am and 3 pm. A coaches and players meeting on August 19 at 9 am will distribute equipment. Sixteen lettermen join the squad as exams will determine after school schedules.
The free mobile chest x ray unit arrives in Rittman on August 12 in front of city hall from 9 30 a m to noon and 1 to 4 30 p m. All persons 15 or over may have chest x rays taken at no cost. This will be the unit’s final Ri effort.
