Sunrise Service at Milton United Presbyterian Church

The Rittman Community Easter Sunrise Service will be held at 6 15 Sunday morning the Milton United Presbyterian Church led by the Rittman Ministerial Association. Rev D Andrew Howey of Wooster will deliver the sermon titled The Stone Rolled Away. Howey, a Wayne County native, has served churches across Illinois Wisconsin Ohio and Michigan and now works with the Alliance Area Church Council and Alliance Hospital. Also listed are local students on the second honor roll and a Lake Erie perch meal fundraiser by the American Legion Hall with takeout available.

Offices Closed in Rittman on Good Friday

Rittman city offices will observe Good Friday closing on April 9 with water bills due that day payable at the bank. The notice directs residents to use the bank for payments and notes the city offices will be unavailable.

Columbia Gas starts $510 thousand pipeline project in Ohio

Columbia Gas of Ohio and Ohio Fuel Gas Co begin a four mile steel pipeline in Richland County to speed gas delivery to Rittman and northern communities. Worthy Brothers Pipeline builds the line for Ohio Fuel with Welds x-rayed and hydrostatic tested. completion expected early May.

Zoning Gives Best Land Use

Wayne County Zoning Ordinance appears on the May 4 ballot as Milton Two Trustee Wilford Blatter urges voters to back zoning. He says it prevents factories near homes and protects property values and public safety. The Ohio rural zoning enabling act of 1947 gave counties and townships authority, with many rural areas now adopting zoning to guide land use.

David Johnson of Sterling Venerated as Driver of the Month

David H Johnson of Sterling died Friday April 2 after a long illness at Wadsworth Rittman Hospital He was born October 27 1880 in Sterling and lived there most of his life He was janitor at Sterling School for 23 years former maintainer for Erie and B&O Railroads and a house painter He was a longtime member of Sterling United Methodist Church serving as Sunday school chorister for 30 years and a former Sunday school teacher He also belonged to the Creston Lions Club Surviving are his wife Hazel a step son Edwin Glessner of Elyria four step daughters and many grandchildren great grandchildren Funeral services were held Monday April 5 at Sterling United Methodist Church Burial at Crown Hill Cemetery in Sterling Gillman Funeral Home in charge

Schmeltzer Receives February Driver of the Month Award

Robert I Schmeltzer, a Fischbach Trucking driver in Akron, is selected by the OTA Driver of the Month Committee for February. He will receive the award May 19 at Neil House Hotel during the 1971 OTA Convention in Columbus, with a certificate, a gold lapel pin, and a $25 savings bond. This marks Schmeltzer’s second Driver of the Month honor. C B Fischbach will accompany the Schmeltzers to Columbus.

Visiting Nurse Service Available in Wayne County

The Wayne County Home Health Agency is staffed by Supervisor Mrs Harold Marilyn Hitchcock and assistant Mrs June Moore. They provide periodic professional nursing to home-bound residents and seek others who could benefit from their services. Continued on Page 5.

Public Hearings On Apartment Rate Hike In Rittman

The Rittman City Council held a special session to hear Ohio Edison rate increase proposals presented by local manager George Kalt and Falb. They argued rising operating costs since 1960 and coal prices up to 697 per ton by 1970 justify higher bills. Critics noted disproportionate burden on KWH customers, with increases shown across usage tiers. A fuel adjustment clause would complicate final charges.

PTA Auction Festival Sets Date At Middle School

The annual PTA Auction Festival will be held at the Middle School on April 24 starting at 4 44. Volunteers are sought to bake pies for the refreshment booth and to work at the festival. Co chairs Mr and Mrs Guy Holland urge donations and consignments and list contact numbers for Mrs William McCaffrey Bruce Graber and others. Various booths and games are planned including a cookie jar, a fish pond, bottle toss, and saddle trap. Cadette Troops 754 and 227 participate with activities while Wranglers and other groups run booths to entertain attendees.

Howard Houck Long Illness

Howard B Houck 78 of Meadowvale died Wednesday at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital after a long illness He was born March 23 1893 in Chester Township Wayne County to John and Minda Weltmer Houck and lived in the Rittman area 43 years He worked 17 years at the Ohio Injector Co in Wadsworth before retiring in 1958 He was a member of First Brethren Church and Carl W Ellenwood Lodge 715 F and AM Surviving are his wife Clara son Richard of Wooster and a grandson Services were Friday at Gillman Funeral Home with Rev Robert Russell officiating Burial was in Rittman Cemetery.
