Pardoned: John L. Casper Releasd From Prison
John L. Casper of Winston-Salem was pardoned during Christmas week after a year’s delay following a lengthy federal trial in Fort Smith Arkansas. He was convicted of defrauding the government of whisky revenues tied to a Fort Smith and St Louis distillery, with about 100000 in confiscated property and a 33000 fine. Casper had served in Jacksonville Florida as a witness in the Thomas C. Mc Coy case in Asheville. He is said to have been an ideal prisoner and the overlapping sentences totaled nine years despite a longer total term.
