Elect New Moderator and Treasurer

The school meeting Monday afternoon was well attended. It approved a nine month term and a 6500 dollar maintenance levy, plus a 5 mill building fund levy for potential gym or school additions. Chas. Stanton elected treasurer, F. D. James moderator, and the board named High, James, and Stanton. Plans for a big Potter celebration are announced. Also listed are sale notices and progress on local buildings including a new bank, garage, hall basement, and growing residences.

Rise in Living Costs Strains Railroads Reported by Kruttschnitt

Julius Kruttschnitt, chairman of the Southern Pacific Executive Committee, testifies before the Joint Congressional Committee on Interstate Commerce. He says wage and material cost increases, plus taxes and restricted revenues, strain railroads and urge centralized federal regulation to improve conditions. He argues responsibility should rest with the federal government to stabilize costs and revenues.

E. E. Ralston Killed in Accident

E. E. Ralston once a lumber man at Peterson yards was killed last week in an accident at Platte Kansas. The message to Lee Peterson at Dix conveyed only the death and cause without details, and mourners offer sympathy to his widow as the community remembers a well known family with many friends.

Planning on Large Celebration Here

The July Fourth celebration committees promise a big lineup with speaking, ball games, races, bucking contests, auto races, dancing, and free moving pictures. No fireworks this year. a 600-seat tent show replaces the display. A note hints that powder for fireworks could outshine it in Germany versus Potter. A complete program will appear next week.

Transportation costs and price increases discussed by Kruttschnitt

A Department of Agriculture bulletin lists 46 commodity prices rising 115 percent. Transportation remains the only major commodity with no steep price rise in twenty years, as freight and passenger charges are lower than two decades ago. Kruttschnitt told the committee that if rates had risen with other costs, the average passenger rate in 1915 would have been significantly higher.
