Estimates place loading of the first ten cars of 1089 wheat by noon Thursday as harvest begins. Reports show yields from less than a bushel to 21 bushels per acre with dry, hard grain testing 60 pounds or better and high protein noted. Some fields yield poorly while others reach 10 to 21 bushels per acre. Rain remains badly needed for corn and pastures.
Dr W T Kahse pastor announces Sunday Bible school at 2 15 p m and worship with sermon at 3 p m The sermon text will be We Liveth Unto God Worshippers urged to attend with invitation to join the service
Pastor C R Tanner invites all to regular worship including a 5:00 pm grove service next Sunday. A week later on July 23 older guests attend the 11:00 am service with invites requested. District superintendent attends the fourth quarterly conference at 5:00 pm on Sunday July 28.
Five Independence Missouri relatives traveling in a car to Potter were injured five miles west of North Platte on Highway 50. Mrs Meril Seroy sister of Mrs Gunderson suffered a broken neck and other injuries. Her daughter Marilynn seven and son Leonard fractured arms. Emma Etzenhouser mother of Seroy escaped with minor hurts. Car overturned after tire failure or shoulder strike. Mrs Seroy driving. Mr Etzenhouser uninjured. vehicle nearly demolished.
Jane Heimber expresses gratitude to friends for visits gifts cards and letters following her accident and hospitalization acknowledging the help from family and herself.
The Potter Bearcats were set to visit Kimball for a league game next Sunday but it has been postponed to the following Sunday due to an earlier harvest rush. Spring schedules left July 20 and 23 open for all teams, but harvest started sooner than expected, delaying the game.
Guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Clyde Brady over the past week include Mrs Grant Brady of Peru Mrs Ethel Stark of Lusk Wye and Miss Madonna Brady of Washington DC.
Local residents heard a Saturday news bulletin about a Farmers State bank robbery in Fort Morgan Colorado by two young bandits who fled with about $10,000. A wild pursuit followed through Sidney and Potter, with police gun battles in Sidney. One bandit, Isa Charles Alien, died in Garden City Kansas after a shootout. the other, Myron Earl Howen, died near Kimball Nebraska. The pair, ex cons with prior criminal histories, had seized a car from a Glenn Oldenburg before continuing their flight.
The notice lists Kimball, Sterling, Pine Bluffs, Lodgepole, Sidney, Bridgeport and Morrill county fairs with dates from August 23 to September 8. It notes the Old Settlers picnic at Lodgepole on Labor Day and encourages clipping the list for reference.
A bank robbery chase through Sidney culminated in a fatal shootout after bandits seized a Tremain car and fled toward the edge of town. Police, led by Vizina and Chief Moore, halted the escape, killed one bandit, and recovered the nearly $10,000 loot as bystanders watched the dramatic scene unfold. The other bandit was mortally wounded, dying minutes later, with surrounding crowds blocking emergency access. The episode showcases a dramatic, rapid police response and a city shaken by gunfire.
The first 1939 wheat load reached Potter elevators on July 7, six days earlier than last year’s opening. It tested 60 with high protein and was graded No 1 dark hard, selling at 54 cents. Floyd Sheets and James Coulter brought in early loads at Hagemeyer and Potter Grain, with reports of uniform high quality across elevators in Potter Jacinto and Brownson.
The American Legion junior baseball team defeated Gurley last Sunday on the Gurley diamond and had lost to Sidney the prior week. Next Sunday Sidney juniors visit for a highly anticipated game. No admission charge, but a free will offering will be collected to cover expenses. coaches are Ralph Robertson and R. G. Eggers.
The Royal Neighbors gathered at the Oddfellow hall last Thursday with Mrs. Edna Walters of Cripple Creek in attendance. A bedspread was presented to Mrs. Phyllis Shaw, the assistant marshal who plans to move to Arizona. Neighbors Emma Ross and Myrtle Smith are hoped to recover soon. Mystery packages arrived. Opal Winn was named special auditor for six months. A lunch of ice cream and cake was served by Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Sheets.
Reports say Mrs Billy Smith, who had major surgery in Denver last week, continues to improve. Her parents Mr and Mrs Peter Nelson visited her on Sunday.
The region has seen its hottest week of the season with daily highs around 100 degrees and little to no rain. Harvesters face extreme heat in the fields carrying extra water to dip tools, while a linotype thermometer reached 116 degrees. A dust storm Wednesday evening brought a brief weather interruption, but no rainfall was reported.
The Cheerful Workers 4 H club met with Alice Ragmugsen on Thursday afternoon to discuss lessons and each girl's best colors. They reviewed others’ articles and planned the next meeting with Carol and Deloris Nelson for Thursday July 20 to complete their dresses. A delicious lunch followed the meeting.
A lightning strike at the Chas Slama farm north of Potter damaged the house including weather board metal corner piece and nails. Mrs Slama was in the front room during the strike but escaped injury.
An army team plans an outing to play a ball game on July 30. The event aims to showcase athletic cooperation with local fans and provide a spirited matchup on the community field.
Potter Bearcats emerged victorious over Sidney Bearcats 8 to 2 after trailing 2 0 midway. Pitcher Jobman faltered late as Potter hitters led by Fisher and Anderson hammered timely hits including a decisive homer. Field support from Subry and a full Potter lineup anchored the win.
Village authorities posted signs on Chestnut Street forbidding truck parking on the north and south sides and prohibiting U turns at the Corn er Garage intersection to create safer traffic lanes for wheat trucks. Farmers may still stop to shop on the main street.
A Wednesday forenoon sighting showed a large blaze near the light plant and mill yards, but it proved only the engine pit burning out. Thick black smoke drifted over the property for about two hours while crews cleared the residue, a recurring annual issue as pits erode and release engine debris.
Arthur Harris, previously ill for some time, became seriously ill last week and was transported by ambulance to a Sidney hospital on Friday. Hospital reports this week have not been encouraging, and Mrs. Harris remains by his bedside in Sidney. All hope for improved news.
