During a widespread lightning outbreak on a Wednesday night, the Ray Wickhorst farm shed burned with a cow killed by lightning. The 32 by 24 foot frame shed housed an old grain separator, a truck, a corn planter, a cultivator, and other items, all destroyed. Loss estimated at 1000 to 1500 dollars. insurance covered the building but not contents.
The Potter Community Boosters meet on a busy evening with 34 attendees after dinner. Himer Seyfang introduced Kenneth Schwartz who reported on Cornhusker Boys State trip as Rev C R Tanner spoke on current matters amid a rain storm. Next meeting under A M Leafdale will be at Stines cafe on Wednesday August 2 1939.
John Witt, who underwent a major operation in Ombha several weeks ago, returned to Potter Monday and is in greatly improved health. He remains weak and will not be able to work for several weeks, but is rapidly regaining strength. Mighty glad to see you here again, John.
The village board contracts with Wachob Bender of Omaha to refinance its $68,500 bond issue at a 3 percent rate, replacing the 4.5 to 4.75 percent range. The move aims to save about $1,100 annually in interest while shifting to a serial bond structure. State of Nebraska holds Potter's bonds. none are due until 1947 except existing serial bonds.
Village of Potter Nebraska enacts curfew requiring anyone under sixteen to avoid streets alleys or public places after nine o clock unless accompanied by a parent guardian or engaged in a lawful errand or duty. The nine o clock siren will mark enforcement from now on.
C B Wheeler of Kirk suffered broken ribs and bruises after a horse-riding team ran away while he worked four horses on a go-dig. He was in front when the horse bolted but escaped more serious harm. His home is near the Rupe and Wheeler ranch on Laurence Forks.
Mrs Byron Pavlat of Sidney returned home Saturday after visiting her mother Mrs Jennie MacAdam who is ill. Mrs MacAdam fractured a small bone in her shoulder when she fell last week.
List of Potter Days committees for August 29 and 30 with chairs and members. Executive chairman Joel Schwartz and vice chair Dean Hagemeister lead the organizing group including ads, concessions, sports, parade, baseball, restrooms, historical and school exhibits, agriculture, livestock, home and dress, 4-H, dance, music, and civic groups with numerous local names attached.
Miss Vivian Light of Potter and Mr. Robert Gunderson Jr of Dix wed in a noon ceremony at St Pauls Lutheran parsonage. Witnesses were Leo O H are and Venetta Light. They will reside in Dix after a Denver furniture trip. Mrs Gunderson is a Potter High School graduate and teacher. Mr Gunderson is an irrigation farmer from Dix.
The Potter boys lead the league with six runs across against Peetz in Colorado City. Subry pitched well as Peetz failed to reach third base, while Anderson drove in six of Potter’s eight runs. Sidney, Kimball, Pine Bluffs, and Bunker Hill had open dates as Potter eyes a feature showdown next Sunday at Potter. Methodist Church notes invite attendees to 11 AM service and 5 PM grove gathering despite poor weather.
The American Legion junior baseball team coached by R. G. Eggers and Ralph Robertson lost at Sidney last Sunday but stay optimistic. They travel to Gurley next Sunday and Sidney plans a return here on July 16. Admission is free though hats will pass to raise funds for expenses.
Cheyenne resident Gus Cavalli spent Tuesday visiting old time friends, sharing stories and catching up with longtime acquaintances in the community.
Baseball fans anticipate a standout match as Sidney visits Potter next Sunday at 2 30. Potter edged Sidney in a recent exhibition and barely overcame the county seat team in extra innings. Sidney has improved and may challenge Subry and his gang, making it a high interest clash with 25 cent admission for adults and free to children.

Edith Oldershaw county superintendent announces updated timetable for teachers examinations on Saturday July 8 1939. Sessions include arithmetic mental arithmetic and bookkeeping at 8:00 am, history and civics at 9:00 am, English composition and grammar at 10:00 am, physiology and hygiene and public school music at 11:00 am, theory and art and Nebraska elementary courses of study at 1:00 pm, reading and orthography at 2:00 pm, geography and agriculture and geography of Nebraska at 4:00 pm, penmanship and drawing at 4:00 pm, with a change in question types guiding the schedule.
Loren V Myers formerly of Broken Bow and with the Farm Security Administration at Sidney joins Potter State Bank as assistant cashier effective July 1. He replaces Harry Coates who resigns August 1 seeking a climate change for health. Myers is well recommended, has a wife and a four month old son, and the family plans to settle here soon.
Rev Jon R Bucknell announced the resignation of H Fay Smith who has served as engineer at Methodist hospital for five years. The resignation is effective today as Smith leaves to become a refrigeration repairman. J M Hughes will assume Smiths duties and Franklin Rowe of Mitchell will return to the staff to take Hughes place.
A strong thunderstorm system drenched the south table and surrounding areas from 8:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., with rainfall estimates generally between one and one and a half inches. Potters and locales east of the Point reported varied amounts as lightning lit the night across the divides and valley. Weather outlook suggested more rain possible later Thursday evening or night.
Last Wednesday at the regular American Legion Auxiliary meeting the officers for the ensuing year were elected. Mrs Roy L MacAdam was chosen president, Mrs A B Connell vice president, Mrs George Ransom secretary, and Mrs Raph Merscheim treasurer.
Invites high school students to a Sunday evening event with games, weinher and marshmallow roasting, and camp fire singing. The gathering happens two miles east, half a mile north and east of town. meet at the drug store at 6:20 and be ready by 6:30 with a dime for transport if needed.
The Ladies Aid of the Methodist church will meet in the church basement on Wednesday July 12 with hostesses Mrs Clarence Johnson Mrs C W Johnson Mrs Ralph Robertson Mrs Floyd Sheets Mrs George Ransom Mrs Ford Wickhorst and Mrs Emma Ross Roll call will be favorite hymns and program Everyone is welcome. While preparing to depart for Potter last Sunday Mrs Chas Waterman and family learned of Mrs Genie Waterman’s sudden death in Los Angeles California. The family rushed to attend the funeral meeting Mrs Juelfs in Cheyenne and Richard Juelfs accompanied his mother to Cheyenne. Mrs Genie Waterman had been unwell for some time.
No serious accidents occurred during Fourth of July festivities in the community. Hundreds enjoyed picnics and relaxed at home or with relatives. Large crowds gathered at Kruger’s Lake and Lost Park, while farmers battled grasshoppers in the fields.
Readiness is complete for Oregon Trail Days at Gering July 13 14 with an expected turnout surpassing last year s 35000. Highlights include the Times Square Follies with 35 glamour girls vaudeville acts a six horse hitch street races concerts and a large parade with Union Pacific participation. Attendees from Nebraska Wyoming Colorado and dignitaries including Gov Cochran Gov Smith and Congressman Coffee are slated to attend with others under consideration. Registration for Old Settlers opens Thursday for pioneers before 1910 and two air conditioned Challen ger coaches will provide rest rooms. The Torrington Cavalry will perform maneuvers on day two. Enthusiasm is high for a bigger Oregon Trail Days than ever.
Mr and Mrs R K Hancock and daughter Rosamond of Tekamah Nebraska spent Wednesday and Thursday at the Emil Nelson home while en route home from vacationing in Estes Park.
Mr and Mrs Harry Warner and children Mr and Mrs Thos Iverson and children and Mrs Howard Fisher and younger son enjoyed a picnic at the Kimball dam on the Fourth.
