A Canadian vessel exploded in the St Lawrence River with about thirty dead or estimated dead. The disaster caused widespread damage as rescue teams search for survivors amid debris and smoke. Officials say the incident occurred during a storm and wreck situation near the river.
In Brockville Ontario on June 27, Mrs. R A McNeil wife of the foreman of the ill fated drill boat J B King braved the storm to search for her husband after witnessing the explosion that sank the craft. With her five children she launched a rowboat aided by a stranger and reached the wreck as a rescue boat arrived. McNeil was saved with minor injuries and shock and brought home.
Lightning storms across Ontario and Newfoundland cause multiple deaths. A drill boat in Brockville claims 30 lives after explosives ignite. A passenger train plunges into Vermillion River near Capreol killing four and injuring one. Freight train wrecks kill six near Capreol. Sudbury sees rail delays. Chicago June 27 The law hunts for clues in the Jake Lingle murder case with reports of large loans from gambling housekeepers and city officials. Investigators seek loan sources and motives including Mayor Carlos Ames Alderman Bert Cronson and Samuel Ettelson and his son. A $500 canceled check drawn by Lingle and cashed by Police Captain Dan Gilbert is under grand jury inquiry with Gilbert offering to testify.
Members of the Mobile county bar and interested parties plan to petition the county board for a fireproof weatherproof vault beneath the courthouse to store deeds mortgages and other records. The grand jury adjourned Thursday and recommended photostatic copies be made and placed in a fireproof vault.
Los Angeles report shows Sanhuber sticking to a denial that he murdered his rival. He claims the county grand jury was urged by Herman Shapiro to implicate Mrs. Walburgen Oesterreich and that Shapiro coached him. Detectives Holmes and Green investigated a Thursday night assault report involving Dr. Baxter, age 32, of 32 Blacklawn. Baxter was found at Mobile infirmary with a knife wound to the left side of the back, he claimed the injury was accidental and provided few details.
Mayor Harry T. Hartwell will speak at 11 o'clock Saturday at Fort Barrancas Florida citizens military training camp. Publicity officer Major Noe C. Killian announces the talk on Citizenship before about 600 students at the camp.
Harold H. Schroeder a 35 year old Mobile Alabama man accused in a torch murder plot to collect sixty four thousand dollars in life insurance was given a long undisturbed conference with relatives. He said he would reveal details of the case if permitted. He repeated his story of an unknown hitchhiker killed when his car ran into a ditch and the car set on fire with the body inside. Relatives including his brother Ernest Schroeder of Chicago and sisters Mrs Lynn Sama of Elkhart Ind and Mrs Fay Speight of Clarion Ia and his wife Mrs Leah Schroeder were allowed to talk with him. His wife is expected to arrive from Mobile tomorrow.
Istin Brome Crichton youth pleaded guilty to a federal violation and was fined 275 dollars and sentenced to 62 days with a warning of federal prison if reoffended. Ollie White, John C. Dixon, Boe Wheeler and others faced fines and costs for conspiracy or violations with varying sentences.
Jacksonville aviators George Haldeman and Stuart Chadwick prepare to fly for a 75 hour endurance record using 1400 gallons of gasoline. They must exceed the current 67 hours 15 minutes, on a 14 160 pound monoplane with a 525 horsepower engine.
In Decatur Alabama on June 27 Judge William E Skeggs was found guilty of second degree murder for the killing of Policeman T E Wright who tried to arrest him for a traffic violation. The jury deliberated 30 hours before verdict. Skeggs admitted the shooting but said he did not know Wright was an officer. He was sentenced to 10 years and released on bond pending appeal notice.
A grand jury returned no bill against Davis in the Rawls fatal affray near Whistler. Other figures indicted include Ruth McDonald for forgery, Alfred and Sallie McGeffery for forgery, W F Dixon, Eugene Messina for burglary, Louis Marshall for prohibited liquor violations, and several larceny and auto theft cases.

Chicago June 27 A E Roth of Palo Alto California was elected president of Rotary International at the silver jubilee session. Announcement was made this afternoon as officers were presented and the crowd sang Auld Lang Syne before dispersing to homes worldwide.
