President Hoover sustains his veto of the World War veterans relief bill amid House votes 188 to 182 to uphold. A substitute plan to ease objections would cost about 50 million dollars for 1931 and target veterans with 25 percent disability receiving 12 to 40 dollars monthly.
E W Argo of Nashville Tenn was chosen unanimously as chairman of the Dixie Boosters executive committee and Nashville named the 1931 convention city. Officers elected include vice chairman E W Reagin secretary treasurer Miss Minnie Frye and R E West and Mrs L L Flood. About 900 delegates plan to depart for Key West en route to Havana after sessions.
The Brazilian steamer Almirante raceguay arrived in New York carrying President Elect Julio Prestes for his U S tour. Its cargo includes 37 500 bags or 2 500 tons of unroasted coffee from Sao Paulo plantations.
In Cedar Rapids police comb the area for the killer of Sheriff Fred Sweet and Night Marshal Bailey after a shooting in Washington Iowa. The fleeing suspect, tied to a bank robbery gang from Oxford, fled north in a stolen car abandoned by the road.
The Senate voted 53 to 0 to authorize selling government power from Wilson dam to municipalities on the same terms as to private companies. Senator Black of Alabama urged War Department approval of Muscle Shoals power requests, including Muscle Shoals town, with Alabama Power as current purchaser.
J. A. Taylor a 45 year old general contractor was found dead in his car on the North Birmingham road. A bullet through his brain and two bullets in the vehicle were found. The windshield was smashed and police and the coroner began a homicide investigation.
Easier money, firmer grain and cotton tones, and gilt edge buying lift the New York Stock Exchange. Copper stocks climb after Anaconda cuts dividend to 3.50 and a Ryan copper industry note. Bears pull many industrials back to near Wednesday closes while blue chips stay supported.
Coast guard reports position of the Southern Cross 130 miles east of Portland Maine at 1 10 p m EST. The plane’s course lies east northeast from Cape Anne toward Yarmouth and Portland as it heads to New York with Captain Kingsford Smith and crew aboard. Weather forecasts warn of poor flying in Maine but clear conditions toward New York.
Mrs. Maud Gunn, 37, found guilty of second degree murder in Talladega County for slaying her husband W. C. Gunn, owner of Sylacauga filling station. Sentenced to 20 years. Daughter Catherine, 17, fainted as verdict read. Trial revealed insurance policies totaling 21 000 dollars with Gunn as beneficiary. Mrs. Gunn claimed three highwaymen killed her husband during a car stop near Chocolocco bridge.
A book by Sergeant Alvin C. York, WWI hero from Fentress County, has been adopted as a school textbook in New York, New Jersey, Kansas, and Michigan. It records Tennessee history and the long hunters movement through the Shenandoah Valley into Tennessee and Kentucky, with chapters on Daniel Boone, Davey Crockett, Sam Houston and Andrew Jackson.
Re-electing all officers and selecting Mobile for the 1931 convention, the Alabama Association of County Commissioners ended its second annual Montgomery convention with about 300 delegates from 60 plus counties. Resolutions called for a joint recess committee to study county government needs and recognition of the association as a body allowing county contributions. Officers named include Harry Culverhouse president, Haygood Paterson first VP, J D Petree second VP, E T Terry third VP, M C Fountain fourth VP, and J W Heustess secretary and treasurer.
Decatur Alabama June 24 The jury in the murder trial of Judge W E Skeggs deliberated after a three day trial The judge testified he killed traffic officer T B Wright only after being struck with a blunt instrument and claimed he did not know Wright was a policeman The packed courthouse awaited the verdict as jurors debated late last night.
Philip LaFollette, progressive Republican, announces his bid for the Wisconsin governor nomination. He is son of the late Senator Robert M. LaFollette and brother of Senator Robt M. LaFollette Jr. The primary is set for September 16, opposing Governor Walter J. Kohler who has backing from the conservative Republican faction.
Miss Helen Trafford Moore of Asheville North Carolina has a poem included in The Spring Anthology 1930 published in London. The item notes Moore is associated with the North Carolina School for the Deaf and mentions her upcoming summer vacation plans.
Two people were killed and two others seriously injured today in a car accident near Salisbury. The dead are Rollins Younce 21 of Spencer and Catherine Evans 17 of Thomasville. Injured are Louie Watkins 21 of Salisbury with a fractured skull. The car collided with another vehicle.
The city of Mobile proposed paying $5,000 for Jimmy Hamilton's 51 percent stake in the Mobile baseball club. The offer will be aired Friday at a special meeting of league directors in Memphis, as league President John D. Martin announced. Hamilton called the bid ridiculous, valuing his holdings at $50,000 though he paid $15,000 for the stake. The plan would keep the franchise in Mobile and allow resale to a competent operator if accepted.
Work of the June term of the Mobile county grand jury began two weeks ago and is to conclude Thursday with a report filed in the afternoon before Presiding Judge Claude A Grayson of the criminal division. Many witnesses were examined as the end neared and the witness room remained crowded. The jury also inspected public buildings during Wednesday afternoon. Solicitor Bart B Chamberlain noted that vacations reduce the chance of extending school openings across the county.
The inferior criminal court postponed the Swendsen cases to Monday. S. Swendsen of Cottage Hill faces an assault to murder charge with a related petit larceny count, while Walter Durand accuses Swendsen of stealing two doors valued at $2. Leroy Smith is charged with reckless driving and unauthorized use of another's automobile. the case details involve Deputy Sheriff John Cantrell recovering the vehicle in Whistler.
Hamme Nowling of Escambia county was fined 150 dollars in federal court for a second liquor possession offense. A physician letter claimed his life would be endangered if alcohol was suddenly removed, but prosecutors noted barrels of liquor at his home as evidence of non personal use. Judge Ervin accepted the nolo contendere plea. The text then lists several co defendants.

Prisoners indicted by the grand jury that adjourns Thursday noon will be arraigned in circuit court on Monday July 7 and allowed to plead. Dates for hearings will be fixed for those who do not enter pleas of guilty. The criminal docket will be sounded on July 14.
The body of Bertha Ella Carr, 36, who died from injuries from a June 5 crash when her car hit a freight gondola at Water and Monroe, was shipped Thursday to Laurel Mississippi for burial. Higgins and Conditt handled the funeral shipment.
The case of Harry Jones Sr a 30 year old man and father of nine charged with murdering his wife Lola Jones 43 at their home on 171 North Ann street was sent to the current grand jury after a police court appearance Thursday. Jones confessed to beating his wife leading to her death at City hospital Wednesday.
Washington reports April unemployment at 574 647 for about a quarter of the nation. Arkansas shows the lowest share of unemployed at 0.4 percent while Nevada tops at 4 5 percent. The data cover 756 counties and 75 cities and reflect seasonally adjusted changes since April. Secretary Lamont says unemployment is much less than feared and that seasonal work has boosted employment.
Hattie Gibbs of 1457 Hogan Street was sent to City Hospital Wednesday night with head injuries after an assault police say by John Mulhall. Detectives Bernstein and Burch investigated but no arrests were made.
G Alrgero reports his car horn was stripped while parked near Monroe Park Wednesday night. Elmo Renfro reports his gold watch stolen from his trousers.
George B. Riley a 62 year old river front worker well known along the Mobile docks was found dead about noon Thursday in a cafe at the foot of Eslava street. Death was attributed to heart failure after a period of illness.
Three men drowned in Buffalo after a storm struck with a sixty mile wind. Two horses were killed by lightning and extensive damage spread through the city as minutes after noon, a sudden downpour accompanied by fierce winds lashed the area.
Forecast of possible thundershowers for Thursday night raised hopes of relief from the hot wave gripping the city. Meteorologist Albert Aschenberger warned of storms while a hot afternoon pushed the temperature to 97 degrees by 12:30 PM.
