President Wilson summoned the heads of major railroads to Washington to confer on the threatened strike. He will not meet with the managers committee until their arrival, signaling that the eight hour proposal may be rejected by the executives.
Mr B G Alexander executive secretary of the international committee for the South will arrive in Mobile Friday August 25 for talks with the Mobile Y M C A. He tours the South prior to a general meeting of international leaders in New York in September to discuss a forward step in fall and winter association activities.
Hose Company No 3 was summoned to the foot of Madison street at 11 40 PM for a fire aboard the launch Magnolia. The fire started from an overturned lamp igniting a mattress but hose service was not required. The department also answered a trash fire call at 923 Government street and another at 13 Kennedy street.
Richard Daly and John Daly were arraigned in the inferior criminal court on the charge of assault and battery. Evidence showed they attacked Tom Smith with a knife and a pop bottle, causing serious wounds. Richard Daly fined 101 dollars plus costs or four months and twenty days hard labor. John Daly fined 51 dollars plus costs or 30 days hard labor.

The West Indian hurricane moved into the Yucatan Channel and turns north toward the coast. The weather bureau advisory warns ships to keep clear as the tropical disturbance remains powerful and shifting north of west.
American Consul Bundy in Kingston cabled that a severe hurricane on August 15 caused heavy property losses and a report of the entire banana crop down, with Kingston isolated and damage to Jamaica reported at 6 p.m. local time.
The U S postoffice sub station No 1 at Sutton's drug store corner Royal and St Francis streets opens its stamp department. Manager J D Sutton says postage stamps of any amount are available daily 7 am to midnight and plans to add money orders parcel post and registrations when forms arrive.
Commissioner Harry Pillans, candidate for re election, filed his petition with Mayor Pat J Lyons on Thursday to place his name on the official ballot for the September 11 election. The petition contains 277 names.
In the recorder and inferior criminal court, several defendants faced prohibition charges. Robert Thomas paid a $50 fine. Martin Burns was discharged. Edward Moody and George Richardson received continuances until August 22. Woodie Wright pleaded guilty and paid $50 plus costs. Additional raids Wednesday uncovered liquor at multiple locations including Vincent Camelieri A Weiss J Baerman Charles Roycroft and M Maisel.

Robert McMillan, a Crystal Ice Company driver, was arrested Thursday by City Weights and Measures Inspector J A Hughes on charges of giving short weight. The recorder D H Edington was shorted 45 pounds of ice for 50 cents. McMillan allegedly cheated the recorder on two other occasions and was caught in the act.
Lola G Locke filed a $25000 damages suit in the law and equity court on Thursday against F H Peck over the death of her husband J L Locke in an April 13 1916 automobile crash on Hall’s Road. The crash involved Peck and other occupants while Mrs Locke and her son were among the injured.
A damage suit was filed in the law and equity court this morning by Mrs Texie Donalson against the Street and Light Railroad Company for 5000 dollars. She claims while riding a streetcar she was assaulted and beaten by a Negro woman passenger causing pain and humiliation. the occurrence reportedly happened some time ago.
