The YWCA reports Mlle Furriet Taylor, former head of the foreign department, has arrived in France to lead activities. Since war began, YWCA chapters have opened posts for French and American women. The organization runs nine foyers in key centers and four hostess houses in Paris and Tours. American women in the Signal Corps are quartered at two houses. The Paris Petrograd hostess house, the largest, centers American life with Red Cross nurses and YM and A workers visiting. Each base hospital has a YWCA nurse, and tea and social plans are offered by the local secretary at all hours.
The piece argues private industry and government cooperation drive America’s wartime output in oil minerals and metals while opposing political obstruction and labor agitation. It cites labor shortages, calls for higher wages and immigration limits, notes production lag behind quotas, and warns of conscription to enlist nonessential workers.
The United States Equalization Board has readjusted sugar prices effective September 9. Wholesalers and retailers cannot raise prices on sugar bought at the former price.
