Notifying Relatives of Casualties in the Expeditionary Forces
The division maintains a card index roster for each contingent that failed to join the Ex peditionary Forces listing soldier name organization and the emergency contact. Upon receiving casualty lists from Gen Pershing, each name is linked with the on file address. Telegraph clerks use ready blanks to fast send notices and duplicates as new emergency addresses are added. Delays arise from clerical errors France to America address changes and the need to verify names. Military considerations may also delay word if Pershing withholds a list for security.
