The letter from Washington dated June 15 outlines the updated pension rates under the act of June 2012 for Civil War veterans who meet age and service requirements. Rates range from 30 to 40 dollars monthly based on age and length of service, with increases effective without further action. The change applies to soldiers and sailors pensioned under the act and supersedes lower rates under other laws for those who qualify.
Chautauqua events run July 4 to 8 1918 with daily morning shows for children and varied afternoon and evening programs. Performances include Ye Old New England Choir, Paul Sunshine Dietrick, Floyd Featherstone Company, John A. Gray, The Bohanans with Verdun songs, The Musical Marines, and Lectures on topics like The Sacrifice and Out of Work. Admissions range from free for children to 25 cents and up to 50 cents for some concerts.
Food Administrator Wattles orders Nebraska hotels to observe designated days and meals for presh beef. Monday lunch roast beef, Tuesday dinner beefsteak, Wednesday and Saturday lunch boiled beef. Noon meals 11:00 to 2:30. evening 5:00 to 1:00. Households urged to cap beef at 1.25 pounds per person weekly with pork substitutions allowed.
Penalties issued this week for food rule violations include two Central City grocers closed one day, Hoenschel and Emery Bakery in Lincoln suspended 30 days for false reports and insufficient substitutes, baker Gus Stots in Grand Island 10 days, Hastings Bakery closed one week for insufficient substitutes, Gus Cades Candy Kitchen in Norfolk one week for buying sugar without certificates, and four Omaha grocers shut from flour sales for selling false substitutes.
Any dealer in poultry butter and eggs who has not applied must contact the License Division Food Administration Washington to obtain the proper blanks. A letter requesting blanks is sufficient to place dealers within the law.
Wartime plea urges every citizen to contribute by producing and consuming wisely. It emphasizes maximum personal effort, saving, and purchasing War Savings Stamps to support Army and Navy, urging all noncombatants to help the war effort.
An urgent telegraph from Mr. Hoover warns of imminent sugar shortage due to losses of cargoes. It directs reinstating strict sale limits of two pounds to towns and five pounds to counties, with emphasis on canning and preserving uses and preventing diversion.
About 240 000 transfers of men between units followed War Department investigations on personnel classification. The War Department committee reports weekly transfers near 40 000, with many camps receiving thousands daily and interview forces of around 200 per center.
