Wheat Flour Stocks To Minimum In Nebraska

Nebraska counties report flour stocks near minimum with limited supply to next harvest. County officials cite visible flour totals such as 121,100 pounds in Scottsbluff and 77,000 pounds with halved merchant purchases in Dodge. Custer reports 101,000 pounds flour and 8,000 bushels wheat allocated for government use in six weeks. Local social notes follow about residents visiting, illnesses, and family gatherings.

Press Convention Opens for Iowa Nebraska and South Dakota

Byron Steer Hurt In Gate Incident At Steer Yard

Byron Steer sustained a severe cut on his limb last week while a gate at the Steer feed yard was being opened and passed through on horseback. The horse crowded the gate, catching his limb on a metal fastener and causing a bad gash noted as a “cat” on his limb. Nearby sidewalks on the D F Isaac residence block were mentioned and D D Pender and family, then living near Beatrice, were visiting friends at Jansen.

War Department Bureau Staff Grows 800 Percent

The War Department reports its army administrative staff has surged from under 3,000 at the war’s start to about 25,000 now, an 800 percent rise, while the Army itself grew over 1,500 percent. Only four of every hundred officers were in the Army at outbreak.

Bands Enlarged and Bugle and Drum Corps Organized

Acting on a Pershing suggestion a general order enlarges each regiment band from 28 to 50 members. Band leaders with five plus years service become first lieutenants. those under five become second lieutenants. A bugle and drum corps is added to each regiment, each corps including its company store of it regiment and no more than 13 drummers.

The ladies met Thursday June 6 and cut all goods on hand. Finished work for May was taken to Fairbury June 8. Hospital shirts 24, bed socks 16 pairs, Pajama suits 19. Materials arrived to supply more knitting. Knitted garments returned in May include sweaters 31 and socks. We have received notice.

Jansen Mercantile Co Closes After Long Service

The Jansen Mercantile Co. ends its operation as the post office store closes. H T Fast plans to move to Toe far while D F Isaac and the firm inventory remaining stock for a likely closing sale. The post office will stay in current location with a temporary manager during military service.

Ordination Planned at Ebenezer Church Next Sunday

Rev Geo T Thiessen of Chicago visiting here will be ordained as minister at Ebenezer Church near Jansen. Rev D Friesen attended the News office recently and extended a cordial invitation to locals to attend Sunday's ceremonies at the church near town. Mr and Mrs Geo T Thiessen arrived Thursday evening of last year.

Missionary G P Schulz to Lead Services at Ebenezer Church

Chicago speaker Missionary G. P. Schulz will conduct services at Ebenezer church. Several Jansen youths attended Chautauqua in Plymouth Sunday evening. A closing out sale by A B Flaming opened Monday drawing large crowds and strong buying at reduced prices.
