Butler Secretary of the Statue of Liberty Committee announces completion of a miniature Statue six inches high with pedestal and mantel model in nickel silver, priced at one dollar delivered to subscribers in states. Remit address to 83 Mercer Street New York.

Garriett taking a teaching post in Concord NH, a French sculptor visiting the US, color vision tests for Delaware Hudson engineers, and a mausoleum project in Jamestown. Lonvork May 24. Reports say a new squadron of Hussars is to sail to Egypt at once and the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich will resume overtime and night-work to speed up ordnance and ammunition manufacture. Public hopes and anxieties grow as diplomacy with Russia stalls and press commentary intensifies.
Paris May 24 large crowds visit Pere la Chaise for burial tribute when anarchists protest dead nationalists. Communists with red flags clash with police, bayonets and revolvers used. many injured and several killed. Forty Communists arrested. wounded sent to hospitals.
The Attorney General rules head money tax applies to foreign visitors and all passengers at ports other than citizens and residents, and to immigrants. The Treasury will collect the care of arriving emigrants and port hospitals, with Baltimore and Philadelphia showing excess collections and New York underfunded. The ruling follows pressure from New York immigration authorities and will boost the fund substantially.
Post dispatch from Newark West Virginia reports a brutal farm dispute between J P Buffington and August Killian over Buffingtons cow. Buffington suffered a fractured skull broken ribs and numerous wounds while Killian sustained seven stab wounds and severe head and facial injuries. Both men are dying as three to four neighbors intervened during the melee.
In Piqua Ohio on May 24 a thunderstorm struck Cavalry Baptist Church during services. A bolt hit the roof above the pulpit tearing brick and mortar from the ceiling. Pastor Rev P M Weddell was badly bruised, his daughter also injured, debris fell around the pulpit, but no further deaths occurred.
A stranger from West Virginia in Washington since March 15 loses cash and credit and steals a bicycle. He writes to the owner he borrowed the machine and will return it, muttering he would rather hoe corn hills in West Virginia at twenty five cents per day than wait for a cabinet place.
At Indianapolis on May 24 Fred Gessler and wife prominent Germans were struck by an engine while crossing Belt road in a buggy. The vehicle was demolished. Mrs Gessler suffered a severe head cut, broken shoulders, and body bruises. Mr Gessler and conductor McGriff were badly bruised.
The body of an unidentified man, about sixty, plain dress, was recovered tonight from a canal near LovursviLle Kentucky. A bullet wound in the back and several days in the water were noted. no identifying marks or papers were found.
St Paul dispatch reports Father Cochin and 25 prisoners bearing a white flag arrived from Poundmaker's camp seeking surrender terms within two days. Poundmaker aims to negotiate with General Middleton after messengers send letters. hostages total 21 women and children from Bresaylor. Middleton reportedly at Prince Albert on the 19th.
Last night in Cobden Illinois Alex Welker was shot and killed by William Mayes in a feud over a woman both men loved. Mayes fled and remains at large with authorities seeking him.
Wincite Estill County Ky May 22 News comes of Simpson Trussell a six foot eleven inch giant near Irvine Estill County He weighed nearly 300 pounds and remained gentle yet brave He spent years as a county poor house inmate after paralysis and lived with several wives and many children His comrades from Camp Douglas recall his daring in the Civil War and his Italian ancestry traces to Virginia settlers.
The 1885 police census for the District of Columbia reports a total population of 203,978, up from 177,624 in 1880, a gain of 16,349. White residents grew by 6,992 while colored residents increased by 19,447, with Washington city at 169,688 and Georgetown at 14,320. The district now has 95,680 males and 108,293 females. whites to colored ratio shifts from two to one to 643-10 to 387-10. Five year growth stands at 142-5 percent.
The Times notes growing anxiety as ministers provide scant details, with no clear signs of progress in negotiations. It warns of a standstill and a lack of a satisfactory settlement since the breach began.
In Erie, Pennsylvania, a jury awarded L Rosenzweig Esq forty eight thousand seven hundred fifty dollars in damages for being ejected from a Lake Shore limited express train after the conductor refused a regular ticket payment for passage from Cleveland to Erie. Rosenzweig fell on stone and became paralyzed. He sued for damages.
New York on May 22 reports 214 U S failures and 25 in Canada totaling 239 for the week, up from 229 the prior week and 248 the week before. More than two thirds of U S failures occur in the Southern Western and Pacific states.
Goodwin Jackson, color ed, hanged at Clarendon Arkansas in front of a large crowd for killing Sandy Redmond last November. He protested he did not intend the death and said he struck after Redmond threatened to hit Mrs. Jackson.
Washington May 22 The President named Wm T Bishop son of ex Governor Bishop to head the First District of Ohio and Ira Ellis to lead the First District of California as Collectors of Internal Revenue.
Savannah Georgia May 24 Robert McCoy was yesterday convicted of the murder of Henry Miller and was sentenced to be hanged on June 26. He killed his victim by sinking a pine knot into his rain.
In New York on May 22 the Frelinghuysen family discloses that Judge Frelinghuysen’s first serious illness stemmed from aconite mistakenly bottled with his mineral water. Dr. Lincoln of Washington notes the bottle contained enough poison to kill four men.
Locust plague expected in Marshall Illinois as thousands emerge from the ground during plowing, turning up in gardens and reaching an almost matured state.
Cincinnati records a deadly catastrophe at Sullivan & Co's Printing Establishment on Sixth Street. A benzine explosion trapped seventeen women on upper floors. many leaped or fell to the street as flames raged. Eleven workers died, including Lizzie Meyers and Annie Bell, with rescuers and firemen battling the blaze. Nannie Shepherd, injured yesterday, died this morning from internal injuries.
Lonxon May 21 dispatch notes the Cabinet weighs the crime act and budget anew. Suakim garrison sickness reaches one tenth as Guards stay in Egypt for careful handling. Brunswick throne dispute in Bundesrath meets near unanimous opposition. Bartholdi statue begun for America as Victor Hugo's health flagged. Russia ominously steers toward war with London stocks weakening.
A Burton City burglary at a store owned by James Connor led to a fatal confrontation. An alarmed clerk awakened the family, a pursuit followed, and shots were exchanged. one burglar died, others escaped. Connor suffered fatal wounds, and the thief carried a firearm with the name H. F. Adams. About $2,000 was taken.
General Carbo's forces fought a bloody engagement with the Yaquis near Guaymas on May 20. Fifty-seven Mexicans were killed and many wounded, while the Yaqui stronghold was captured. Yaqui losses are not yet known.
In Pittsburgh on May 21 Franz Karlind shot and killed the three year old child of a man named Lepig with whom he boarded. He then attempted to murder the man and concluded by taking his own life. The incident ends in suicide after the fatal attack.
Paris May 25 Communist procession at Pere La Chaise ended in a sharp clash as rioters tried to leave the grave site armed with knives amid red flag displays. Police dispersed the mob after a brief, non fatal confrontation. several wounded on both sides were reported. London May 25 Lord Granville left for Stone Park Staffordshire during Whit Sunday holidays as cabinet aims to keep foreign affairs steady should Afghan disputes flare.
Washington officials announce American Bank Note Company of New York will supply postage stamps for four years at 101,516.85 per year for ordinary stamps plus 2,442.79 for postage due issues, totaling 103,969.61 per annum. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing bid higher at 114,136.89. Savings arise as ordinary stamps cost 699-100 cents thousand under the new contract, down from 919-100 cents. About four billion stamps are needed annually, yielding substantial reductions.
A Sunday night storm struck the Abe Winglee home seven miles northwest of town. Lightning entered the sitting room injuring Mrs. Winglee who died, Miss Van Varis was knocked unconscious, and Mr. Winglee with two others were struck but conscious. The house caught fire but was put out.
Nellie Brittell of Elizabethtown New York aged twenty one disappeared twelve days earlier while gathering winter greens. Her body was found on the Bouquet River bank with her clothing scattered along a two mile stretch. Authorities believe exposure and starvation caused her death after she wandered from home.
Des Moines area May 25 Rev T J Hahn pastor of the African Methodist Church died shortly after finishing his discourse. He grew excited and collapsed then died as women wept at the pulpit. Coincidentally his predecessor Rev J W Cheek died in a similar manner nearby.
In Blackfoot Idaho May 2 in the Third District Court Bishop George Stuart and four other Mormons pleaded guilty to polygamous practices. Each was fined 300 dollars and sentenced to four months in the Territorial Prison. Stuart escaped five chose ago through the care of his fifth wife. These are the convictions in the Territory.
Pleuro pneumonia has broken out among cattle across parts of the state and fears rise that the outbreak may spread. Delaware counties report several herds affected, with concerns the illness could move into Pennsylvania, as officials monitor the situation.
In Wheeling on May 2 a group of five seventh ward youths roamed an island and ate poke root. They became violently ill with convulsions. Medical aid arrived and all were saved except James Boyce aged about fourteen who died.
May 25 report from Council Bluffs notes Shenandoah Page County Iowa is hit by a smallpox outbreak. Special police patrol affected houses as nineteen cases are quarantined. The Mayor and the Board of Health president are among the infected.
A Commercial street man wears the champion belt for meanness just now. His clerk is an expert penman and practices shading the letters on envelope addresses when the employer, who glimpsed him, quips that shading wastes ink and isn’t worth it.
Bogus sovereigns are said to have been made in London recently and sent to the continent where they were rapidly passed for genuine coin.
