In Portland Oregon on May 31 Mrs Pres ton Smith wife of a prominent capitalist was killed instantly in her bedroom while nursing a baby. A pistol carried by the chambermaid discharged when moved from bed to mantel. The revolver had been left under the pillow by her husband moments earlier. Mrs Smith, a Huntsville Alabama native, married there six years ago.
May 29 reports from Deming and Silver City New Mexico describe thirty Indians killing five men near Silver City, with volunteers pursuing them and harsh rumor of inaction by the military. In other districts Captain Madden attacks Geronimo's band on the Upper Gila, while raids devastate ranches and killings occur nearby. Across Battleford, news arrives of Fort Pitt burning and grisly discoveries including Policeman Cowan and the bodies of Father Marchand and Father Farford.
A May water spout near Richman Canyon, nine miles from Lincoln, drowned eleven of a seventeen person Bohemian party. John Macek and wife and son, John Osmer and four children, Joseph Havelic and wife with three children were swept away as floodwaters carried wagons down the canyon. Rescue efforts found two bodies by nightfall. eleven dead, four missing.
A W Mullen former manager of the A W Kellogg Newspaper Company hid in Philadelphia since last November and was arrested on a Columbus requisition for embezzlement. He allegedly diverted $4000 to $5000 from company funds by misposting entries and pocketing checks, and awaits further legal action in Harrisburg after a late-night arrest.
A heavy rainstorm swelled Waco Creek flooding hundreds of homes. T Dininghoff and family perished when their house washed away, joining Howard Lewis and relatives as victims. Eleven total deaths reported with over 250000 dollars in county damage. The storm affected much of North and West Texas, damaging crops and railroads.
New York May 2. The Advance from Rio de Janeiro reports Brazil's new ministry announces a plan to abolish slavery via a national registry of slaves with declared values. Slaves under sixty get depreciated value up to 200 milreis. those over sixty receive no monetary value but a three year service term. Existing emancipation fund continues, plus a new fund funded by a five percent tax on all public revenues except exports. Indemnity to slave owners set at five percent, with policies covering half slave value and five years service for remainder.
New York May 29 Senator Edmunds will sail on the steamer Auranta tomorrow for England to testify before the House of Lords Privileges Committee in a civil suit over the Earl of Lauderdale title and an £80,000 annual income. The case questions the 1772 marriage of Sir Richard Markland and Mary McAdam solemnized at Trinity Church and impacts colonial law of that era. The claimants are Sir James Ramsay Maitland and Major Frederick Henry Maitland, descendants of the Lauderdale lineage and Adjutant General of the North American Colony from 1765 to 1772.

In Hannibal Missouri on June 1 two young sisters aged eight and ten, daughters of Samuel Conrad the fisherman, tried to crawl under a Wabash freight train near the boat landing. The elder was crushed when the train moved, her arm caught, and the wheels passed over her body. The other girl’s screams led to the train stopping.
A water spout burst over Yankee Branch and Crooked Creek Valleys in Crawford County Missouri on Friday afternoon sweeping away fences crops and portable belongings. Nearly all farms in the area were devastated with soil washed away several feet and total damages running to thousands of dollars.

Gonzalez is expected to try vindication, with allies predicting a revolutionary bid if blocked.
General Crook reports eight parties of troops scouring after Indians from Fort Bayard with a bleak outlook. The War Department notes roughly sixteen to twenty companies about twelve hundred men in the field across the Arizona theater.

Dopee City Kansas May 31 The Dodge City Post Office was entered last night with the safe blown open and about 600 dollars in cash taken along with a large number of registered letters stolen, police report says.
In Philadelphia on May 29 Achilles Onofri, an Italian, was found guilty of first degree murder for beating and abusing his nine year old step daughter. The verdict concludes a case marked by brutal domestic violence and a fatal injury sustained by the child.
Ten of thirty eight steel and iron mills in the city signed the price scale. Mills without signed scales faced strikes.
