Portland May 17 Generous rains across Oregon and Washington Territory have boosted expectations for a record wheat crop. Winter wheat looks excellent and spring grain is expected to mature in all fields. Conservative export surplus for Western Oregon at six million bushels and inland empire totals twelve and a half million bushels, up about thirty percent from last year. Harvest to begin about two weeks earlier.
New York May 12 The Denmark brought the largest importation of Percheron horses to the United States. Forty seven stallions and sixty two mares from La Ferte Bernard and August Tacheau were bought by Edward Blewett of Fremont Nebraska for the Oregon Horse and Land Company. Prices ranged from 500 to 2800 dollars for mares and stallions above 1000 dollars. They head to Baker County Oregon to stock the empire ranch, with about eleven thousand animals branded this year.
A Kansas cycl storm on May 15 near Medicine Township traces westward through Rooks County. Fifty people injured and some fatally, including Rev Grimes and family. banker S. J. Johnson injured by falling timbers. Hail four inches across shatters chimneys and glass. Bull City and Stockton suffer minor damage. total losses around $50,000.
In a dramatic railroad town trial, Chesley Chambers is revealed as the alleged robber after a brawl of witness identification. Weber’s warning and Chambers’s sudden arrest stun the crowd as the courtroom erupts with shock and fear. Chambers posts bail later provided by his uncle Chesley Woodward.

In Locust Gap Pennsylvania Miss Julia Kramer eighteen was fatally shot by rejected lover Peter Knolbauch during a chat with William Neuman an accepted suitor. Knolbauch fired three shots saying he would marry or kill her. Kramer died, Neuman was wounded, Knolbauch was arrested as an attempted lynching was prevented and he was jailed.
New York May 15 The failures reported to R G Dun Co show 299 total in the United States and Canada, up from 248 last week and 208 the week before. Failures are spread across all sections of the country with even distribution.
In Marietta Georgia on May 17 Mrs Simpson of Paulding County went fishing on Pumpkin Vine. A sudden bite led to the line pulling her into the water where she, unable to swim, drowned. Her body was recovered sixty feet from the fishing spot. The catfish weighed twenty two pounds and was found with the hook in its mouth.
Chesley Chambers, arrested for the Bloomington express robbery, has been fully identified. A room search recovered broken express packages and money punctured by the expressman’s needle. He is jailed on the charge of attempt to kill.
Sumverville Massachusetts May 17 Martin Burckees 1812 veteran died at his son's residence aged ninety seven He was the last survivor of the party under Captain James Lawrence in the Government man of war Hornet who captured the British brig Peacock He climbed the mast and first saw the white flag flying from the Peacock
Violent storms sweep Hungary and Romania over two days with deep snow in many regions. Hurricanes and hail have destroyed vineyards and growing crops. Many persons are reported killed.
Berlin report states England has ordered two hundred automatic torpedoes from a Schwarzhoff firm at a cost of 3200 each. The shipment price totals 640000, with delivery details not disclosed.
London May 17 The Government will dispatch a medical mission to Spain to evaluate the effects of inoculation using cholera microbes.
Dispatches describe a violent train attack near Battleford with eight rebels killed and many captured. General Middleton claimed victory at Raspnese before moving toward Prince Albert. The steamer Northcote reports a river skirmish at Batouche with light wounds and rebels surrendering, while Riel’s fate remains uncertain.
In Blackfoot on Saturday deputies aimed to arrest eight people for unlawful cohabitation at the Meeting House. They were blocked by a guarded private meeting, retreated, then later seized Sam Humphrey and Simpson from out of town. Marshal Dubois arrived by special train, examined the area, and stated warrants target polygamists under new territorial laws. John D. Jones of Malad pled guilty to unlawful cohabitation, fined $300 plus costs, with about fifteen similar cases on the docket.
The May Agricultural Department report lists average farm wages by region with Eastern States 25.30 dollars, Middle States 23.19, Southern States 14.27, Western States 22.26, and California 38.75. It notes high labor demand but local complaints of scarcity in many areas and suggests city offices to connect unemployed urban workers with farmers needing help, to verify character and reduce risk of misidentification as tramps.
In Owatonna Minnesota last night Henry Lewiston and wife escaped a blaze that gutted their second story. The father and mother fled with the youngest child, while the hired man broke a window to escape. Mrs Lewiston was severely burned and five children aged from ten to four perished upstairs.
In Wheatfield Township the Tarah family and eight others ate tainted pork. A week later John Turah died at eighteen, while Theodore Turah, Mary Brouthour and her child are near death. Four more Turahs, Linter and Brouthour are critically ill as doctors confirm trichinosis in the meat. The region is panic stricken and pork is avoided.
New York on May 14 Eugene Walton collection clerk at First National Bank was arrested and brought before U S Commissioner Shields charged by bank cashier Ebenezer Scofield with making a false entry of 7000 dollars Walton denies embezzlement and claims no involvement with the books In default of bail he was jailed in Ludlow Street Jail for the night with defalcations total stated at 15200 dollars
New York on May 15 Henry Albers paid 4700 dollars for a gold brick he believed to be worth 15000 dollars. It turned out to be a chunk of brass worth only a few dollars.
QuEbec May 15 The steamer Lake Huron reports a passenger Mrs H E Sponson drowned herself and her child on the night of April 30 while the vessel was on a transatlantic voyage from Liverpool.
Edward Santa Rosa, aged sixteen, recounts being lured from New Orleans onto a ship to Key West and then to Puerto Barrios, Guatemala. He describes torture, coercive payments, slave labor, scarce food, brutality by soldiers, and mass mortality, with Rosa claiming escape in January and return to the United States.
A Cleveland four story building fire on Ontario Street left family members including a three year old burned and others injured. In Chagrin Falls a runaway team killed Spencer Chamberlain and injured his wife and child. Multiple suicides, accidents, and deaths followed across Ohio with postmasters named and a libel suit against The Lima Daily Times.
Judge Hawkins summed up in the Cunningham and Burton treason felony case concerning dynamite explosions. Burton’s unoathened statement was given little credence. United States Minister E. J. Phelps attended in mourning as the jury found both prisoners guilty and sentenced them to life penal servitude.
Macon Georgia on May 18 an explosion at Bibb Manufacturing Company cotton mill during engine startup kills engineer Frank Gibson and injures two others while Wesley Johnson dies from a fractured skull. Three others hurt. The brick rag house is wrecked and damages to machinery and engine house are about 10000 dollars. One hundred fifty workers are left unemployed.
In Chicago on May 18 Mrs. Hunting, accused as a baby-farmer, was sent to the County Jail. A coroner's jury ruled the infant death stemmed from neglect by Mrs. Hunt and she was held for action by the Grand Jury.
Mr. T. M. Garrett of Washington fra. owns a cyclone pit noted as more dangerous than the cyclone itself. Part of his family and neighbors ran into it during a thunderclap and gust, and had to be pulled out due to gas from the pit.
