A digest reports fines in a Chicago federal court for railroad executives, meat inspection policy actions by Secretary Wilson, shipping and rail accidents in Wisconsin and New York, mutinous attempts at Sevastopol, a fatal Elsworth hotel murder, transport wrecks, strikes, fires, and other incidents from the United States and abroad including political shifts, legal cases, and industrial notes.
In New York on July 17 Mrs. William Thaw, mother of Harry K. Thaw, was permitted a private meeting with her son in Tombs cell No. 220 after travel from Europe. The Thaws agreed to continue counsel by Black Olcott Grusber Bonynge. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw had earlier visited but stepped aside for the mother.
Richard A. McCurdy former Mutual Life Insurance president was served papers in a suit demanding an accounting for about 2 million dollars disbursed through “yellow dog” funds. It is the second suit against him by the company, and the fifth overall involving his son Herbert and son-in-law Lewis A. Thebaud. No other defendants have been named to date.
Columbus Ohio July 14 According to Stand Pat operators here about 35000 miners in Ohio are out due to a disagreement over the scale John H Winder chairman of the Stand Patters will confer with the class and other members of the miners executive board A telegram from Athens reports orders issued by miners officials calling out 10000 miners in Stand Pat mines in the Hocking valley Miners idle on the impression the June 1 agreement provided for payment of the 903 scale of prices The companies claim they are paying men on the basis of 588 percent above the scale of 1904 5 The small difference per ton adds up to thousands in the aggregate
Henry S. Neal of Ironton Ohio a congressman from 1876 to 1883 died of a paralytic stroke suffered two years earlier He was born in 1828 at Gallipolis and served in the constitutional convention and Lawrence county legislature He later became consul to Portugal A staunch Republican he backed McKinley Garfield silver and later supported Bryan in 1896
The Ohio State Pardon Board, Columbus, July 14, reports decisions on several cases. Harry Jones of Hamilton County, jailed for a 1892 murder, life sentence, rejected. Louis Sampson of Jackson County, 1892 murder, life, commutation to 20 years requested. Frank Nance of Meigs County, 1905 cutting to kill, one year, pardon recommended. Harry Shull of Greene County, 1905 burglary, five years, pardon recommended. Salt the liquor conditioner Hobbs of Preble County, 1901 assault, life, commutation to eight years recommended. The board will hear the case of Wm Hammell, Dayton, on August 30.
Simon Vivian chief mechanical engineer at the new Cincinnati waterworks died in a dramatic accident at California Station while testing a tram way system. He stood near a stone wall as a heavy coal car jumped the track and crushed him, instantly ending his life.
Butler Styles, Franklin county murderer condemned to die, received a 60 day reprieve to allow an inquiry into his mental condition. Styles killed Guard William H. Morehead by striking him with an iron bar during an attempted capture. He had been serving a life sentence for a prior killing in a Bad Lands saloon. Father Healy reported Styles' odd behavior to the state board of pardons, prompting the stay and possible further testimony from convicts.
Columbus Ohio July 13 state prison officials rescinded a month old decision naming Price Russell as warden and Benah Williamson as secretary Russell met Governor Harris with his bond and said he could approve it or not but no action followed
Springfield Ohio July 14 jurors found Edward Dean guilty of murder in the case tied to the recent race riots and recommended mercy. The verdict imposes a life sentence in the Ohio penitentiary as Dean is guarded against possible lynching efforts.
Gov Pattison appointed Trout Crayton as warden, and while Crayton voted no Burton and Dun, hold-over Democrats, joined Republicans. At noon Gov Harris and Secretary Flickinger visited the state prison, dining with the prison board and warden, outlining management wishes.
In Findlay Ohio July 13 the Standard Oil Co has made no plea to the information charging it with violating anti trust laws. If no plea is entered by the seventh day after summons Judge Banker will enter a plea of not guilty. Sheriff Groves reported serving the summons on J D Rogers secretary but could not locate President John D Rockefeller or other officials.
A Staten Island balloon flight to Manhattan ends with a dramatic rescue as the waterlogged craft fouls a small vessel topmast. Three men Leo Stevens Charles Levee and Jas Hare are saved from entangled ropes and rigging.
Dr. John L. Hoyer of Cleveland began a second term at the state prison for assault. He arrived at age 65 with a long white beard, presenting a patriarchal, benevolent appearance. The incident recalls his prior confinement when he was nearly sixty.
Defiance Ohio July 17. Charles Ward 19 and Arthur Ward 17 were swept into a 20 foot deep water hole in the Tiffin river. Charles attempted to help Arthur while onlookers watched from the bank and both drowned.
Dayton Colorado July 12 city officials announce plans to arrest Frank Kearns accused of deserting his wife and abducting their child from the family home. The wife was located in a destitute condition.
An eastbound C H D train ran onto a burning bridge north of Middletown. The engine and several cars passed safely but two cars crashed through and were destroyed. No serious injuries occurred, with property damage estimated at 2000 dollars.
Des Moines troop forces from Ft. Des Moines rescued Robert Hyde, a Black man, from a mob that sought to lynch him after claims he pushed a white woman off the sidewalk. The incident occurred in Des Moines Iowa on July 17.
Kansas City July 17 A Santa Fe switchman W J Johnson died from rupture of an artery near his heart while opening a letter from his sister informing him he had fallen heir to $20000. He did not live to learn of his fortune.
E. S. Wertz of Dalton, a member of the Ohio legislature, married Miss Elizabeth Johnson of Wooster in a simple ceremony conducted by Rev. George T. Atwater of Akron in Wooster Ohio on July 12.
Cambridge Ohio July 14 Charles Riggles and Riley Righer charged with burglary reportedly dug through a brick jail wall using a piece of iron and escaped before authorities could detain them.
In Chicago on July 17 cement workers ended a ten day strike after the Cement Contractors association signed an agreement granting all wage demands. The settlement marks a complete victory for the workers and a new labor accord in the cement industry.
In Toledo on July 14 a moderate bank run occurred on the East Side, roughly $10,000 was paid out but the bank remained stable. Principal owner E H Klauser is able to personally handle all deposits.
Henry Cole of Cripple Creek reportedly won heavily here and gave waiter Larkin Pogue a five dollar tip. Pogue examined the bill, collapsed, and died within a quarter hour at the hotel.
Mrs Frank Kuhn and her daughter from Lowellville visited Youngstown Ohio and after eating ice cream fell seriously ill on the return trip. The mother died shortly after reaching home, while the daughter survived.
T Ewing Miller a wealthy retired capitalist from Columbus suffered a paralysis stroke at the Hotel Victory in Sandusky while walking with his life long friend General I Warren Keifer of Springfield. The incident occurred July 12.
In Columbus Grove, Ohio, on July 12, Charles Marks, about 40, a laborer, shot himself. Despondent over failed winter job searches, he leaves a wife and three young children.
Springfield Ohio July 14 Merle Ray 13 son of William Ray drowned after noon in Chap mans creek near Dialton while swimming he was seized with cramps and sank before help could reach him.
Karnes City Texas July 17 W S Wayfield a leading politician was shot and killed instantly by IC Goode an attorney and banker following a prior disagreement authorities report no further details available at this time
Harry Mason once captain and star forward for Marion high school basketball is critically ill from injuries suffered in a game against Columbus North two years ago. He was previously a prominent player for the Marion team in local contests and remains a focus of community concern.
Marion Ohio July 14 W A Haines 25 was found dead near the Big Four track at Larne Coroner Brad ley investigates and suspects foul play the skull was fractured
Lisbon Ohio July 13 Work has begun on the Youngstown and Ohio River railroad electric line connecting Youngstown Salem Lisbon East Liverpool and intermediate points near Lisbon with construction started outside the city.
In Hubbard, Ohio, C. N. Clingan a prominent merchant and head of the Law and Order League was hanged in effigy. The village kept Sunday so strict the town could not even sell a newspaper.
In Youngstown Ohio on July 13 officials from the city and county work to trim the upcoming tax levy to a normal level from last year’s 2.94 with this year’s projection at 3.46. Authorities seek practical reductions to ease the financial burden on residents.
